USCA: Beef Checkoff Modernization Act Reintroduced In U.S. Senate

USCA (June 4, 2009) - The U.S. Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) applauds U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) for his reintroduction of S. 1062, the Beef Checkoff Modernization Act, in the U.S. Senate on May 18, 2009. The measure includes amendments to the Beef Act that:

• Relax restrictions that currently limit the number of industry groups eligible to contract with the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) for beef checkoff funded contracts;

Devote 30 percent of the checkoff product marketing budget to promote beef derived from cattle exclusively born and raised in the U.S.;

• Assures a referenda will be held anytime changes are proposed in the assessment level, contracting requirements, oversight, administration or organizational structure of the program, collection or allocation of proceeds.

"The U.S. Cattlemen’s Association applauds Senator Tester for his work to update a decades old checkoff program," commented Jon Wooster, USCA President, San Lucas, California. "Checkoff paying producers overwhelmingly want at least a portion of annual collections devoted to promoting and marketing U.S. beef. This bill accommodates that concept. Additionally, it provides for a producer vote any time significant changes are made in the checkoff program, including any change in the assessment level, putting control directly into the hands of those who fund the checkoff. This bill deserves support from producers who should be contacting their Senators asking them to sign on as a co-sponsor of the bill."

S. 1062 has been referred to the Senate Agriculture Committee.

USCA Executive Vice-President Jess Peterson said, "Senator Tester did an outstanding job of reaching out to cattle industry stakeholders and ensuring that all parties had input in this bill. This is a well written piece of legislation. USCA will be monitoring its progress and we will keep our members informed. In the meantime, it is very important for producers to contact their U.S. Senators and ask them to support the legislation by signing on as a co-sponsor. We can make meaningful beef checkoff change happen if we unify and work together with our elected officials."

I got a problem with the 30% deal,why not 70% ?

Wonder where that 30% figure derived from?

Will the remaining 70% be used to promote imported beef?
