It's a 'rare' opportunity to employ a number of people in a rural North Dakota community.
Today, folks in the Harvey area got a chance to stroll through the new North Dakota Branded Pack and Ship plant north of Harvey.
Debbie Kuehn reports...
When you're trying to pick out a porterhouse or select a sirloin...a lot can be at stake. What with reports of E-coli contamination or hormone injections, consumers have become a little more choosing about what they put on their plates. That's why branded beef is becoming so popular. It tells the consumer where and how the product came to be.
(Bill Coheen, ND Branded Beef and Pack) " You have a big push for the North Dakota branded, North Dakota products being used in North Dakota."
Hence, the resurrection of this meat-packing plant north of Harvey. But North Dakota Branded Beef and Pack operates a bit differently. They're leaving the marketing and sales up to the guy who raised the beef.
(Bill) "Yes, the producer takes it back or it moves to whoever their customer is. We perform the in-between activities to take a live animal and get him packaged in the manner and to the criteria that their customer would want."
Beef and Pack opened last fall, and already employs more than 20 people. Cohee says they've already process enough beef to possibly warrant a change in their status with the U-S-D-A. He attributes their success to their devotion to please their customers.
(Bill) "I have seen a lot of beef, a lot of meat through different areas on my table at home or through restaurants throughout the country because I used to travel a lot through field sales. And this is just superior. People should be proud of their beef here in North Dakota."
