Witnesses: Canada bus passenger beheads seat mate

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Manitoba (AP) -- Passengers aboard a Canadian bus fled in horror as a fellow traveler viciously attacked his seat mate, repeatedly stabbing him and then severing his head, witnesses said.

Police said a 40-year-old man was arrested after the grisly attack late Wednesday night aboard a Greyhound bus en route from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

They said he didn't even know the kid-just got up sat beside him then started hacking at him. Would of been nice to have somebody packing on that bus.

I was a passenger on a Greyhound bus going on the Trans-Canada Hwy more than once. There are a lot of goofy and weird people on the bus. Sure don't miss those days. Something like what happened doesn't surprise me in the least....considering no regular citizen is allowed to protect themselves up here. Too bad the trucker that stopped on the highway to help didn't take his crowbar to the sicko.

This is such a sickening story. They have already had him in court and he wouldn't talk. He's obviously undergoing psychological assessment. If this guy wasn't hearing voices in his head it would be amazing.

Good on the guy who got everyone off the bus. It could have been even worse if he hadn't been thinking fast.

Did anyone else hear that off the record, one of the responding police said that he was eating his victim :???:  :gag: I think CNN or FOX was reporting that...

That fella sure couldn't have got that way from just good Canadian whiskey :drink:

Canada's making the paper daily with something weird lately-- another foot found today......

Last updated August 4, 2008 4:59 p.m. PT

Foot washed ashore is human, authorities say
By CASEY MCNERTHNEY
P-I REPORTER

A black athletic shoe found Friday on a Clallam County beach contained human remains, authorities said Monday.

But the King County medical examiner determined the foot came off naturally after floating in the water, Clallam County Undersheriff Ron Peregrin said.

The shoe was found Friday about 14 miles from the Canadian shoreline. U.S. authorities are working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to see whether there's a connection to five feet that have washed ashore there.-------------------------------------

Peregrin said the Washington shoe is similar to three of those found in Canada. The remains appear to be from a human right foot and were inside a man's low-cut athletic shoe, possibly used for hiking.

"But this is a considerable distance to where the others were found in Canadian waters," he said. Unlike the Clallam County shoe, which was sent to the King County medical examiner on Monday morning, the five found in Canada were primarily white athletic shoes.

Since August 2007, four men's feet and a woman's right foot were found on Canadian beaches. The RCMP said last month that none of the feet was forcibly severed. Police discovered that two of the feet belonged to the same man and determined that a sixth foot found earlier this year was not human.

I think someone was using a scanner to eavesdrop on the Mounties, and posted what they got on the net.  :? :? :? That's just plain disgusting.

The foot thing is sure weird though. :? :? They showed pictures of all the shoes on the news this morning, and they were all running shoes. I wonder if it's just that they don't sink that's making them show up. Whatever is going on, it's bizarre.

What's next?

This bus thing is a local story here, so here's a bit of an update.

Apparently the accused spent the day before the murder in a small town near us. He spent the night sitting on the ground in the Co-op parking lot. While he was sitting on the street with his bags, a local kid walked by and he asked the kid if he wanted to buy his laptop. The kid gave him sixty dollars for it. According to the news, the kid, a fifteen year old boy, didn't think anything odd about the man, but some others in town reported being creeped out by him. The kid's mother was just sick when she heard about what this guy got up to, and the boy didn't sleep too well either. This isn't the sort of thing that happens around here, so there are a lot of people in Erickson who are pretty shocked. The cops came and got the laptop, and the boy got on the news.

They had the guy in court today, and he still wouldn't talk to a lawyer. He's going for psychological assessment. He wouldn't talk to anyone. The only words he said in court was "Please kill me."

Now that's creepy.........

I tried not to mention that. :? :? :? :? :?

I wouldn't be surprised if the actually gets sent to Stoney instead of a mental institution that he gets his wish...........

Makes you kinda wonder when he said "Please kill me", if it was so he would stop hearing the voices in his head. That's the only logical explanation for this whole deal, the voices told him to do it. I wonder if he was ever on any meds at any time of his life.

Having the young man's ear and nose in his pocket when he was arrested is creepy!!!

Be interesting to trace back where this fellow came from...Serial Killers often like to keep "trophy's" from the bodies of their victims...I had the opportunity to work with one of the Detectives that had interviewed Otis Toole and Henry Lee Lucas- who either on their own or after they teamed up are believed to be responsible for over 100 murders- altho the exact count will never be known...Their murder spree spanned a time of from the 50's (each killing someone when they were very young) thru to the 80's before they were caught...

Anyway this detective told us how not only was Lucas a cannibal- but they both save trophy's from their victims bodies- ears, nose- fingers or their favorites were womens breasts and nipples--and even had these "trophy's" in their car on different occasions when stopped by police- but they were never noticed...

I could care less if he is hearing voices or needs meds......He still decapitated a fellow human being in a public bus....He should be studied and then taken out back never to be seen again....

Now don't go getting all up in an uproar! I was just wondering. I'm not condoning what he did, for whatever reason he did it. Just gives me the heebie-jeebies thinking about it. I'm just saying there's no possible way he just did it on a whim.

According to the CBC, this is the basics of the story.

Charged with second-degree murder in the horrific death of Tim McLean, 22, aboard a Greyhound bus bound for Winnipeg, Vince Weiguang Li, 40, has now made two brief court appearances and been sent for psychiatric assessment.

From these appearances and from what acquaintances and co-workers have said about him during his seven years in Canada, a still very sketchy picture is emerging of a man who worked at menial jobs, mostly kept to himself and, at least on certain occasions, had problems dealing with family and co-workers.

Vince Li, appearing in court in Portage La Prairie, Man., on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, to face second-degree murder charges in the death of Tim McLean on a Greyhound bus. (John Woods/Canadian Press)
According to the Crown attorney in Brandon, Man., Li's former partner, Anna, said he had a habit of taking bus trips with no apparent destination. The Crown is also looking into information that he may have spent four days in a psychiatric institution.

His next court date is set for Sept. 8, 2008.

2001 Li arrives in Canada from Beijing with his common-law wife, Anna, and lives in Winnipeg for nearly five years, court was told on Aug. 5, 2008. It is not clear whether it was Li or Anna who qualified for entry under Canada's federal skilled worker program.

2001–2004 Nothing known at this point as to what Li did during his first years in Canada.

October/November 2004 Shows up at Grant Memorial Baptist Church in Winnipeg looking for work and is hired as a night custodian. Stays there for about six months.

Summer 2005 Li takes a job as a forklift operator for Midland Foods on Nairn Ave. in Winnipeg. His wife is working in restaurants and begins attending Grant Memorial Church on her own, according to Tom Castor, the minister at Grant Memorial.

2006 Vince Li leaves his wife and moves to Edmonton.

2007 At some point in 2007, Li is granted Canadian citizenship, court was told. That means he had been living and working in Canada for at least three years without incident.

July 2007–April 2008 Works for an Edmonton distribution company delivering newspapers.

In Edmonton, Li lived in a 300-square-foot basement apartment at 8322 Jasper Ave. and then a larger 16th-floor apartment in a building nearby, on 90th Street near Jasper, the CBC found.

January to June 2008 Works at the Clairview mall Wal-Mart in Edmonton as a janitor, mechanic and later as a cashier. Mostly kept to himself, though staff there said he was let go after a disagreement with a fellow employee, the Edmonton Journal reported.

July 2008 Returns to his newspaper delivery job.

Morning of July 28, 2008 Li delivers his last set of newspapers.

Midnight of July 28 In Edmonton, boards Greyhound bus bound for Winnipeg.

July 29, around 6 p.m. Li gets off the bus in Erickson, Man., with at least three pieces of luggage. He spends a long time in M&M Grocery store and then, according to one witness, passes the night on a park bench.

Morning of July 30 From the park bench, he sells his new laptop computer to a 15-year-old boy for $60; Li tosses in the computer bag for free. He spends most of the afternoon in an alley beside the grocery store.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Li boards the fateful bus heading to Winnipeg, which is carrying Tim McLean and 35 other passengers.

July 30, 7 p.m. Greyhound bus arrives in Brandon, where the driver gives passengers extra time to eat.

July 30, 9 p.m. (approx.) Attack takes place about 10 kilometres east of Portage La Prairie, Man.

CBCNews.ca: 40-year-old suspect held in gruesome Manitoba bus killing
According to some of those on board, the bus driver ushered all the other passengers out of the bus while the attack was taking place and disabled the bus so it could not be driven away.

July 31, 1:38 a.m. Li allegedly broke a window on the bus, threw out a knife and scissors and then jumped out. He was immediately arrested by the RCMP.

Aug. 5 In a brief court appearance, Li's only words were to ask the judge "Please, kill me." He has so far refused legal help and has been ordered to have a psychiatric assessment.

As if all this isn't bad enough, yesterday an order was issued to Canadian border crossings that there is a group of Baptist fundamentalists on their way to Winnipeg to protest at Tim McLean's funeral.   They are saying that this poor kid's murder is the result of Canada's official policies on gay rights, and whatever else they disagree with.

It's like insult on top of injury. Absolutely hurtful, disgusting, and more. I can't even imagine the mindset that leads people to think this is Christian behaviour. :???: :???: :???: :???: This poor kid lost his life in a most horrible way, and they want to use this tragedy to further their own agendas. They want to disrupt a family grieving a lost child with their (*^%%. Shame Shame Shame.

And as if THAT wasn't enough, now PETA is trying to buy ad space in local media to tell everyone that what happened on that bus is the same as what happens in a slaughter plant. No one will sell them ad space, to no one's surprise. Shame Shame Shame again!

What has the world come to when people will use the suffering of others to promote their own personal agendas and causes?   If these people think they are going to gain support with this objectionable behaviour, they should think again. And if they do gain support, then shame on everyone else.
