Anyone going to Brandon on Thursday? Hubby was at the auction mart yesterday, and Rick Wright flagged him down to see if we'd be there. We are. They are really pushing to get a big crowd.

For our American friends .... we have our very own checkoff controversy going on in Manitoba. The government proposed a checkoff to fund new packing capacity. That's all fine and dandy, and not a bad idea since Manitoba got the biggest kick in the butt from the BSE .

That's where the fine and dandy part ends.

They have implemented it with no consultation with the cattle producers, and it's not just that they didn't think to consult with us, it's that they absolutely refused to speak to the MCPA about it.

Point blank refused.

No vote from the grassroots allowed.
No option to have it refunded.
No choice.

They didn't even run it by the rest of the politicians, just decided to do it and then did it. An order in council or some such thing. It involves a government appointed board that gets the funds and then decides how to hand them out. The problem with this is that the government also refuses to speak with the MCPA about who should be on the board. So far the ones nominated to this board have no experience in the packing business.

This is not good. :?

The reason Manitoba got the biggest kick in the butt was due to our under supply of killing facilities. All the local plants were backed up for months, sometimes you just couldnt get an animal killed for months.

Not being from Manitoba I will try to answer but will gladly stand corrected if wrong. They shipped most of their fat cattle to closer US plants as Alta. packing plants were farther away. That being so they didn't have the contacts or the history with those Alberta plants so had no place to sell there fats. Also that reflected back to the price paid for feeders.
The ALTA treasury also stepped up a little more for producers at times.

Kato,

Ya I think we will probably be there.
I had the pleasure of meeting M_R the other day and it would be nice to meet you and Cowzilla as well......Oh ya, and to "voice" my opinion at the meeting ,too.
I was thinking it might be a good idea to get good and drunk first and then show up wearing my Straw R-Calf hat(with the whistle) and then accost Roseanne Upchuck in the parking lot after the meeting. Too much maybe???

7:30 at the Keystone, right??

Hey maybe my old buddy, "Redriver" will be there!!! :D :D
