First time he's been on in about 6 years. LOL He belongs to my MIL. Basically he's just a pet to her, she feeds him oreos, biscuits, donuts, you name it. Took quite a few horse treats, to get him caught, and saddled, but after that was accomplished, the ride was great.

She thinks she can train him for barrels. LOL

I swear that girl will ride anything she can get a saddle on.

You tell her, people ride a mule cuz they are too broke to ride a horse
and too proud to ride a cow.

(Hope no one takes offense. This was written all in fun. I have a lot
of respect for mules. My Grandfather used to raise them in Missouri.)

OK here's how it all started. There I was mindin my own business, cookin supper. When I looked out the kitchen window......to this....so I grabbed my camera, and snapped this one thru the window.

The way to a mules heart it thru his stomach! Lots of horse treats LOL

He's a lil jumpy. 10 years old, and he ain't been on in 6 years.
2008-08-03-013.jpg

What made her decide to do this today.....I have no idea. She's a nut!

Swingin' her leg over......

Ahhhhh.......ok he's fine, she's fine....what next?
2008-08-03-023.jpg

Then the first picture I posted LOL she rode him for about 30 minutes. He never gave her a bit of trouble. She's got it in her head now that she's gonna train him for barrels too. I ain't kiddin, if we had an elephant, that she could climb up on, she'd train it for barrel racin. Hehe.

It's less than a week until we leave for NBHA State Finals, and I kept tellin her, "Don't hurt yourself, ya don't wanna hurt yerself before State Finals", but alls well that ends well.

Soapweed, does yer mule have a gut on him like "Red" does?.........

Lil Lilly must be as hard up for entertainment as I am. :)

Wish we lived closer; I'd let her use my mule for barrel racing. He is pretty "Thoroughbred-looking" and he is speedy. At the Jake Clark Mule Days saddle mule race in 2006, this mule took second place. I think he would be a good barrel racing mule, because he is both fast and catty on his feet. For sure he is at least "half fast." :)

Good for Lil Lilly. I wish her well in her new challenge of barrel racing with a mule. Thanks for the pictures.

Soapweed has anybody ever bucked a mule at a rodeo-the names you could give them are endless-Bad Ass comes to mind. Saw a few nice mules on our trip south for sure.

Mules' eyes are positioned just a tad bit further back around their head than those of a horse. They have the reputation for being sure-footed because they can see all four feet while they are in motion. This is the reason that only mules are used to transport people and freight to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. This is also the reason that a mule can buck a person off, and accurately kick that person with both hind feet as they are coming down. :)

Mules are a disease kind of like alcoholism. You can dabble with them for awhile, but you soon remember why you like horses better. After you get rid of the mules and a period of years go by, you forget why you didn't like them to start with so you purchase another. Then it all comes back to you why you sold out of mules in the first place. :) :)

Good analogy. Grandpa always said that mules were made to pull wagons, logs, and plows. The only time you ride them is to and from the field. And then only if it's a fer piece.

No. She's thought about it, but from what we hear around here, the rodeos are 2 in one day. And the entry fees are big compared to the pay outs.
She Runs NBHA in our district.
Novice entry fee $20
2 Open entries $52
2 Youth entries $44

So for 5 runs it's $116.

That's about 1 entry fee for one horse at the HighSchool Rodeos. So she's goin where the money is. Usually have 120+ entries in the NBHA Open shows. And we usually have 1 or 2 shows a month.
WBR, thats a whole different ball game. The one she's goin to Labor day weekend, Total pay out is $125,000. Then the WBR Finals in November will pay out somewhere in the neighborhood of $660,000 (that was last years pay out)

I sure wish the Highschool rodeos weren't so much, and so far away. Our distance travel to the NBHA furthest one away is like 45 miles.

With highschool rodeo your payout comes from schlorarships etc-there's alot of Canadian kids heading south for school this fall. I think Western Oklahoma has 17 Canadians on their rodeo team. I'd check it out for sure about entry fees-they are $25 an event up here. You can actually highschool rodeo in another state if they have rodeos closer to you than your home one. Our closest rodeo is 200 miles other than our home one. I'm sure glad we went that route-Ty just rides up at other deals to help finance it lol. I'd check it out for sure not just go on hear say though.
