Hit The Deer!!

I got passed by an ambulance on the way home then came up on a bunch of emergency vehicles. I had to turn around and wander the back roads home. It turns out a young girl swerved to miss a deer right into a semi of logs which rolled trying to miss the car. the girl in the car was killed and the semidriver hurt pretty bad. I always just plough them over-vehicles can be fixed. Moose are another matter though-I thought that was what they hit at first. Sad deal!!!

Sad deal. I've taught all my kids to not even brake for a deer seams they do less damage if you just smoke'em.We don't have any Moose here.

That's awfully sad. It's just instinctive to try to miss. One ran into the side of my buddy's new Chevy dually last night, son had one tick the back fender of his car 3 nights ago. We live on the edge of a wintering yard and they are just a hazard this year.

It makes you sit back and appreciate how one moment can change everything. A reflex action can happen so fast that there's nothing anyone can do. So many things lined up at that one moment. The deer in the wrong place, a truck in the wrong place, and an instinctive response by that poor young girl, and life will never be the same again for her family. So sad. :( :(

Yes you better enjoy it while you can-we were behind the other hockey parents going home because I was looking at horses but there were hockey fans coming towardss us to the sr's game-that's my biggest fear is getting kids to and from games unscathed. I think over the years there's been four vehicles totalled by moose on teams I've coached.

So sorry to hear about this accident. And it is pure instinct for some of us
to try to avoid hitting something on the road. I think I need to practice not
swerving after reading this...

My dad worked for a lumber mill in the Big Horn mountains of Wyoming when I was a small child. There were some young guys there who had their own band. They were returning from a gig over the mountains,
in a small car with all their equipment when they hit a moose. It killed
them all. I never forgot that.

That is a sad tale. Hopefully community and family can pull together, and the driver of the semi can come to grips. I can't even imagine.
I hit a deer here when I was younger and was told by the RCMP and Insurance that if you hit the deer they pay to fix things and your premium stays the same. If you swerve and roll your vehicle, then you are in trouble. The best thing you can do is get deer guts on your grill if you have to make a claim or RCMP report.

Several years ago here, a lil gal dodged a possum or coon or somethin small like that in the road. Ended up hittin a huge pine tree. She almost didn't make it. Had to have numerous surgeries on her face.

But I have always always, told my kids...DO NOT swerve to miss an animal, be it a deer, coon, possum, what ever....hit it. The vehicle can be fixed or replaced.

Thank goodness we don't have moose here either.

Several years ago I saw the wreckers picking up a semi load of lumber along the interstate. He was eastbound and swerved to miss a deer and went off the road and crossed the median and the westbound lanes and rolled it up against the fence. A new radiator and some lights would have been pretty cheap compared to a totaled truck. I don't swerve either, hit em and fix the damage if there is any. Thats what good grill guards are for.

My vet and I smoked a deer in the middle of North Dakota one night-couldn't find any deer or any damage but he made a big thump. The moose I hit I ran down from behind so he didn't go through the windshield

Wow, that is sad. :( It is instinctive to swerve and miss. However, my driving instructor made sure I got it through my head that you don't slow down for animals. And I quote:
"Keep rolling. That squirrel ain't gonna hurt your car but if you try to miss him, there could be a wreck that kills people. Animals reproduce."
