Just as an aside, I quit wearing toques a couple years ago and made the switch to those "Fuzzy Russian" hats (don't ask me what they're called) with the earflaps and the fake beaver fur. Way warm :) The kids are embarrased to be seen with me now, but my ears are toasty like I was indoors.

My wife keeps threatening to buy one for me when she sees my red ears in the winter but than I threaten to actually wear it and that seems to have kept her at bay

When our friend from Texas was here in March, you know what he took back for all his buddies?

Winter caps that we call Scotch Caps.

They are wool, lined and have ear flaps that can be worn
up or down. He took a whole load of them back with him.
I found that pretty funny!

The only drawback with them is they are so warm that your head really sweats in them- especially getting in and out of a vehicle or tractor... I'd like to get a badger fur or coyote fur one as they say they wick the moisture away better- but they are a little more pricey- up around the $200 range....

I call those Elmer Fudd hats. Got me one of those, too, when it gets REAL cold!

I call them Russian terrorist hats, as when it's really cold you wear your Helly Hansen belaclava under it so only your eyes show and a mouth hole to breath out of. It's gotta be darn cold to break out the rabbit hat, but they are warm. The rest of the time it's a wool cap with ear flaps that fold up into the hat.

When I was up on the "Slope" in the late 70's I had a Wolverine one.
That, along with the "bunny boots" gave me the "Elmer Fudd" look for sure.

So when you guys are saying Elmer Fudd, you kinda mean like this:

That isn't what a 'Scotch Cap' is, although yours looks very, very
warm.

The 'Scotch Cap' has a bill. I'll see if I can find a picture of one.
Most everyone in Montana wears them.
Apparently you can't find them in Texas, though!

Thats what is called a Mad Bomber or Trooper Hat...Montana Highway Patrol wear them- I think the Mounties used to anyway...ND Fish and Game issued their guys coyote ones- which I just looked up today and are about $400-500 now.... The cheapest I could find were $150-200...Think I'll stay with my $30 rabbit fur.....

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/index/index-display.jsp?id=cat110004&navAction=jump&navCount=1&parentId=cat21082&parentType=category&cmCat=MainCatcat21082

I also have a scotch cap- but its no where near as warm as that Mad Bomber- altho until the chill factor hits about 30 below I usually just wear my hat with the stretch on earflaps I pack in my coat pocket...

Sometimes the scotch cap and the railroader cap are confused- the railroader being flatter, with an extra set of earflaps that tie up in front of the cap just above the bill......

And FH- I think you're right- both the scotch cap and railroader must be hard to find in some areas of the country, because I've seen out of state hunters stock up on them.....

The most popular wool caps up here among the ranching population is what Oldtimer calls a railway cap. Not too many scotch caps worn anymore.

That must be because you are just that much further north and colder.
Still wear the Scotch caps around here. But sometimes you need something warmer!
