I've been looking and I can't find a thing on the internet about Throughbred Horse Racing in South Dakota, nor can I find Simulcast racing. Can anyone tell me if there is any in South Dakota and if not,
what happened to horse racing in South Dakota?

All I could find was Pierre and Aberdeen schedule for May. Is that the extent of it?

Thanks. Getting fustrating...

Montana doesn't have much of a racing card anymore either...Besides it being quite costly and labor intensive-- there just isn't the gambling money interest out there anymore....Its easier for the gambling folks to set in the air conditioned Casinos on every corner and plunk their money into the machines- that are now legal all over the place.....And you have to have the Parimutual money to make racing pay.....

I watched a show on TV a couple days ago that talked about the dying horse and dog racing industry-- Was directed at dogfighting and this Vick deal but they were commenting that much of the death of horse and dog racing is for the same reason I mentioned...But they also said that the generation that were such great horse and dog track fans is now getting old, and dying off and that there is becoming a huge culture change in the US...So much of the US is now made up of Mexicans and Latin Americans, that are much more into cockfighting and dogfighting-- and that instead of the old mob guys that supported horse racing, you now have all these Latino gangs that are promoting the cocks and the dogs in the black and latino communities-- because of the huge amounts of money bet on the fights....

Its a new world our government wants-- FH-- and we're on the dying side..... :(

There used to be a track here called the Quad City Downs.. NOt sure when it close down but I think it went to simulcast for a while and now I think it is used for storage facilitis. Illinois has a lot of OTBs (Off Track Betting) where you can watch races from all over the place. I am told they are rather nice facilitis but I prefer the races live. We still have Arlington and Sportsmans around Chicago (Used ot be a third too) but the season is rea short now.. I think Sportsmans flips between thourobred racing and standardbred racing during the season... My borther took me to thet rack on my 16th birthday, I remember him coming into Chemistry Class and hauling me off to a "Doctors" appointment.. Gave me 20 bucks and we got to play the ponies... One of my first good experiences with my brother after years of being at each others throat... Have been a few times since than and just really enjoy the places, dog tracks too but I always only bring 20-50 bucks..

I think part of this is in the blood mind you, Grandfather and grandmother used to raise TBs back in the 70's in Penn.

FH:

There are still race meets in Ft. Pierre and Aberdeen. Both meets are very early in the season, like mid April to late May. They start in Ft. Pierre in Mid April and end the SoDak season the last weekend in May in Aberdeen.

Fargo has a very nice track with a state of the art surface. I think they are having a tougher go of it than they thought they would. They not only run TB's and QH's but also pacers!

I don't know about simulacast. A bar in Bismarck used to have simulcast betting, it was with/in the bowling alley, and it recently was bought by the bowling alley in Mandan and closed. I have not been in the Mandan bowling alley or it's watering hole.

I think a lack of attendance and betting put the screws on racing at small tracks nationwide :cry2:  :cry2: As a youngin' (like 5-8 years old) I would spend a week at the race meet in my hometown. All the old rancher/horse trader men would place my bets for me, and I did pretty darn good! Oh the good ol' days!

Cheers----

TTB

Thanks for the info, TTB. In looking on the internet, 1997 must have been the last year for much horse racing in South Dakota. I was just very curious since I couldn't find much about it.

One thing is for certain, nothing stays the same. It's kinda sad that
racing has been lost. I read somewhere that it is dying everywhere.
Couldn't back up that statement tho, it just seems I read that.
