Hot Calf Market

Some folks must be seeing green grass appearing and getting some optimism...I just came from the local sale and some calves are up $20-$25 over last week...Prices higher than they were here last fall...550 black steers bringing close to $1.30 -- some black 660 weight heifers around the $1.10 mark..... :D :D

Several buyers really showing some demand....
Definitely smiles on some faces of some ranchers...

It's a beautiful day here, OT. 68 degrees, sunny and no wind. What little snow there was is pretty much gone and things are drying up fast again. Gonna take quite a bit of precip to get the grass going here and sustain it. Timely rains are as important as how much rain. We still have time .....

Pretty nice day here too--temp in the 40's- sun going in and out of the clouds and a little breeze which will hopefully dry up some of this mud from the melting snow....

I wish I could have stayed at the sale-- lot of smiling folks...But had to come down here to the courthouse for a couple hearings... Just killing time now til the attorneys show up

Yep- Haven't seen this many buyers in the seats since last November...And all waving their hands :D

Sold 50 head on Tuesday... Ranging from 1.24 for 500 odd pounders to .94 for a couple 700+ pounders...

These were the bottom end of my steers to be honest.. Was stunned at what they went for.. Made me think about shipping the other 70 odd I still have here instead of taking them to the feed lot,

600 lb steers up here this morning 124.50-steers and cowherd on a BVD vaccine program and the buyers asked for age verification. Some 680 weight steers -48 in the draft-brought 1.17. Pretty good April yearlings have never seen grain. Heifers were about a dime back as were exotic steers of the same weight-in their defence they were a bit plainer cattle.

Generally see it every year......Some things are different this year, but typically, April Fats are one of the hottest times of the year, guys start collecting calves in anticipation of grass....

Some things are different, but the timing is pretty close to the same,

BMR is right about the effect of weather on ready fats, but it just exascerbated a fairly annual event,

560 weight steers--$132.25 at Belle Fourche last week. The optimism definitely isn't due to green grass ready to grow anywhere locally......

Locally, but....Two things....Cattle ship.....I was in Western Washington (not where cattle ship) and grass was three inches tall in some pastures around Stanwood....Douglass County Oregon should be the same (A winter grazing area)....As should some other spring/winter grass areas...

Second, guys will start collecting now that they know they have enough feed to last until grass....

Yeah, I know cattle travel. I just made the local comment because I think western SD is among the driest areas in the country, except maybe where the fire is burning in California! Winter is a nice time for a drought, but a lot of people are getting very concerned about spring moisture.

Richard, it always rains after drought. Hadn't you heard?

The sale in Belle last week, was definately the best one all winter.

A nice rain moved in here this evening. We were in pretty good
shape for moisture anyway, but more is always welcome.

We only worry when it stops raining.

This rain got a little thick on the windshield too.

Glad to hear the good news about the cattle market.
Hadn't been paying attention...LOVE GOOD NEWS!

At the sale in Motley yesterday the calves sold pretty well.

34 Black steer's 565#s @ $1.22

25 Black steers 808#s at 98 cents.

I bought some bred cows for a friend 1300# average from bred heifers up to 5-6 year old cows averaged $800 per hd. in those which I thought was reasonable..
