So I'm grateful to them for taking the time to visit with us. The country continues to draw inspiration from what you've done. I should note, just personally, I grew up in Hawaii, as many of you know, and I still recall sitting on my grandfather's shoulders when those capsules would land in the middle of the Pacific and they'd get brought back and we'd go out and we'd pretend like they could see us as we were waving at folks coming home. And I remember waving American flags and my grandfather telling me that the Apollo mission was an example of how Americans can do anything they put their minds to.

MsSage, got it right.

Obama's quote makes it sound like he was in Hawaii for the Appollo return home. But he was in Indonesia

There were 12 Apollo missions that involved astronauts spanning more then a decade.. starting in 67 and ending in December of 72

Obama born in 1961, left at age five. 66? returning at age ten 71?.. could possibly have seen 15, 16, and 17.. sitting on his grandfathers shoulders..

Barack Obama swings a baseball bat in Honolulu in 1963 (left) and on the beach with his maternal grandfather Stanley Armour Dunham (ages 3 to 5 ? )

From left right: Obama grandfather (Stanley), Obama mother (Ann Dunham), younger stepdaughter Obama (Maya Soetoro) and Obama berfoto together in the early 1970's. (age 10?)

what a difference five years make in age stature and story telling...

Thanks Steve- good post

guess it just brought up another question for me.
Look at that last photo- pretty big lad to be sitting on grandpa's shoulders

maybe they were just back on vacation when he was smaller.

I think it is just story telling.. Obama remembers one photo.. and he remembers TV clips and memories of being with his grandfather at the later landings,.. no real big deal.. (unless they didn't splash down in the pacific).. but the president should have someone fact check his stories before the event..

I guess I'm just not a hypo-critical. as OT was at picking apart Bush..

The one problem that he was speaking of Appollo 11, in 1969.

And yes, just another case of someone not checking his speeches probably. There have been numerous so far.

I'm the last guy to stick up for Obama .. but really he might have climbed up on grandpa's shoulder and watched the capsules... and he could have meant the last few...

but child's memory is not the same as an adults .. Obama and his loyal followers want to create a grand childhood... one worthy of his stature.. we shouldn't be so nit pickity and allow him to tell stories.. then when the shine wears off.. they will see that he is not the idol they so revered.. and wonder why it took them so long to see what was obvious.. and if it never wears off.. well at least they can sit on the porch of the poor house and blame Bush while retelling Obama's stories..
