How Come?

I have been wondering about this for a while now but thought I would post it to see what other people think.

With R-calf saying we have a big problem up here with BSE why havent more been found in the US? Before 2003, baby calves right up to mature cattle were crossing over into the US. One would think if those cattle were exposed to the socalled "high rate of animal proteins " needed to cause BSE when they were young wouldnt there be more cases showing up in US states where Canadian cattle were shipped to. All of the cattle coming from Canada werent slaughter cattle so nobody can use that as an excuse. There was the one cow in Washington that the USDA fellas said came from Canada but thats the only one. Something isnt right with this picture. I would say something is going astray!!

the usa has just as many bse cattle as canada. canada should be testing all otm's, finding them and disposing of them. then the onus would be on the usa to come clean. as it is the canadian producer is being shafted so the american producer can be protected. we find them and announce them while the americans play pretend and the cca goes along with it.

I have been wondering this same thing for a very long time. To listen to R-CALF one would have to think they would have found at least four or five more Canadian cases with the US's superior surveilance system. They have been testing for 2 more years and they have been testing 150,000 head more ANNUALY. Also have to wonder if they are not finding any more of ours what are they missing in their own herd. :?

It does sound like a good reason to shut the border solid to any live cattle going either way (altho few have gone north for years  ) until both countries have a better handle on and knowledge of the entire situation...

My best estimate of why few were found is that right after Canada found the first positive, many dumped anything Canadian they had for fear that they were going to be banned from market....I know locally thats what the few that were here did- so they never got to the age to go thru the incubation and manifest itself....Most around here were bulls, that few keep past 4 years anyway, and the one fellow that I know that had cows he got from his Canadian inlaws sent them to slaughter fast, fearing a possible quarantine....

That and the fact that many imported were dairy- that most dairies in the US, with the use of drugs, burn out in a couple years, not allowing to get thru incubation period either...

Are you saying OT, that an American producer knowingly and intentionally put the consumers at risk by sending "high risk" CDN cattle to slaughter???? :D :D :D

Apparently the dollars outweighed the "principles". Was this guy an R-calf member???

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Not sure if he was- but maybe his Canuck wife was...She was the one having fits about what was going to happen if these cows were seized up or quarantined

That damned Canuck wife..... putting the US consumer at risk like that...and wearing the pants to boot....
I'm absolutely sure that folks who did not have a CDN spouse never sent their "high risk" CDN cattle to slaughter before they got stuck with them and lost a couple bucks.......
Oh ya....... Elvis stopped by today on his way to the lake! :D :D

OT- Your so full of bull its a wonder you dont have brown eyes.  There are still apile of Canadian cattle in the US and you jsut dont want to admit it. I will agree with you on the dairy end of things those cows dont last long but beef cows as hardy as these Canadian ones can last for 15 years. I dont believe you that everyone sent their known Canadian cattle for slaughter when BSE hit up here!!!!!!!!

Now that I think of it thats kind of funny-- he's a real little, quiet, shy guy and she's quite bubbly, talkative, and outgoing--and it appears she may make most the decisions in his life.... Besides that she outweighs him by at least 100 lbs

:D Like I said....... The female Canuck is wearing the pants. :D
Up here in MANitoba, we don't let them push us around like that. Even if they do outweigh us.
Pretty easy to head-fake them with a pan of chocolate fudge........ :D

Well- If you remember, there was a drive by R-CALF and others to have USDA track down, ID, and test every Canadian cow in the US- some states also-- as I believe ND did ID them all- maybe others... When this started many didn't want to get caught holding a Canuck origin cow- that and the fact that Canadian cows were being found with BSE made for a voluntary cull...I know of one fellow that sent several 2 year old Maine X bulls to slaughter just because he didn't want possibly diseased cattle found in his herd...

Also I'm no mathematician- but if you take the number of Canadian cattle left after this voluntary cull- factor in that they were thrown in with millions of US cattle going to slaughter- then figure the percentage of the total cattle slaughtered in the US that were tested- and I'll bet the number of Canadian cattle tested would come out to be a very small number...Remember USDA didn't really ratchet up the testing program until after the Washington cow was found....

That is one of the reasons that R-CALF and several state cattlemans groups were calling for USDA to ID and locate all Canadian cattle in the US and track and test all at slaughter.....As of right now I don't know of any Canadian origin cattle left in my area...
