Commercial black baldie two year old heifer pairs sold for $1,700 in St. Onge, SD on Friday.

Pairs are pretty hot around here right now. Broken mouth pairs will bring $1,000+ with younger pairs higher, on up to $1,500-$1,700 for heifer pairs. I don't understand how that makes sense at all. It seems to me that it would make more sense financially to let your grass sit idle than pay $1,500 for first calf heifer pairs to use it.

That sounds good to me from a sellers standpoint.
Wow. They must want cattle bad to pay that kind of moneyS
Supply and demand..

I think we should look into taking ours there. We were
going to sell them private treaty here at the ranch this fall.
Why wait?

Thanks for the info.

Yep-- pairs and grass calves been pretty hot here too--altho not that high....I think folks are seeing extra green grass- and with all the death losses need something to put on them- especially those that have to pay so much a set AUM amount lease anyway...

I agree- I don't know how it will pencil out- but at least some folks have some optimism :)

If I were selling out this year, I'd strongly consider the market right now. You might make more right now than you would keeping them another 6 months. Let the grass sit or rent it out.

A lot of people around here do stuff I wonder about. ( paying over $200 an acre cash rent for 130 bu. ground. Maybe their pencils are different than mine.

We've been trying to move some Galloway bred cows, that are soon going to become pairs. Starting to calve any day here. Maybe I should bring them south and find a sale barn. They sure aren't that high here. More like 1200 on the top end. But, it's pretty dry here right now also. Moisture seems to have a direct correlation to optimism in this business.

Yeah, if my memory is right I believe it's Jim and Kelly--they had their bull sale on Thursday also.

Pretty dry here to,but people are willing to spend the money.Last sale we were at,pairs with small calves were bringing $1200 to $1500 depending on cows age.Bred cows were $900 to a $1000.

It's great what spring optimism can get some folks to pay, lets hope the better feeder prices hold up this fall or a lot of guys will take a beating. And what happens if we move into a severe drought again likely triggering another cow sell-off? I'm amazed that buyers up here will pay $1000+ for cows and young calves - what were they thinking last fall? There was a time in November when good young dispersal cows were only bringing $480-$520. If you thought you might need cows this spring why did you miss that opportunity of a life time?
We only bought a few because we didn't really need them but with their winter feed included they have probably only cost us $650 to date. If I were to turn around now and sell them we could likely make a profit of more than the total sale price of a weaned calf in recent years - for 6 months keep! I'm kicking myself now of course, should have bought lots and lots of them at that money - if only a guy had known. Never had much notion to be an auction market cattle trader but there are times when it can turn a handsome profit!
