Here is an issue of the illegal immigrant/globalization argument that hasn't even been brought up...It has surprised me that with the millions of illegals coming in from all over the world- especially Central and South America- that we haven't gotten hit yet.....

How FMD spreads

John Maday | Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Reports from Korea indicate farm workers and veterinarians introduced the pathogen and spread it from farm to farm, demonstrating the importance of biosecurity. An article this week in the Joongang Daily in South Korea says that based on genetic testing, investigators have concluded that an immigrant farm worker from China or Mongolia probably brought the Food and Mouth Disease virus into the country and introduced it to the farm at which he was employed.

From there, they suspect a veterinarian who treated animals on that farm spread FMD to several other operations.

Farmers gathering for emergency meetings over the outbreak also might have contributed to spread of the disease, according to the report.

Soon after the Korean government declared the outbreak contained in March of this year, a second outbreak occurred. The owner of that farm apparently had traveled to China and subsequently exposed his livestock to the disease.

The Joongang Daily article is available online.
