"How Kola!"

This was in the "West River Summer" section of our local paper this week....

"South Dakota is the land of the famous Sioux or Dacotah Indians. Dakota Territory and later South Dakota were named for the tribe. Their greeting 'How Kola!' means 'Hello, Friend.' ....."

So, How Kola!

Cheers----

TTB

My brain is definately New Mexican this morning
...
when I first read that I read : HOLA KOLA ---

I guess I was combining a Mexican hello (HOLA, pronounced OH-Lah for all you gringos) with a Dakotian greeting.
:)

Yeah, the name has dual purpose! I just slammed the Cherokee name and it's translation together for the tag name used here. Kolanu ( co-laa-nu) means raven in Cherokee, which is my tribal claim to fame!!!

Si-yo is the Cherokee greeting equivalent !

And yeah, it's a greeting used in Dacotah.

My buddies on the 'rez' who work @ the Museum get soooo sick of the people/tourists saying "how" to them so their reply is " I know how .....WHEN is the real question" You should see some of the looks they get!!!

I am pushing 70 yrs of age, that saying i remember being a HUGE joke when I was growing up.
Have heard it being used with several varaitions since then and not always on the "reservations" that i visit. More often than not used in a derogitory manner.
