How long after calving are most of you waiting till you breed a cow back?
Same time for a first calf heifer?
Bull vs A.I. any difference in time frame?

Kind of been on the same cycle for the last few years--calve between March 15 and May 15- turn bulls in with cows about June 5th-6th..

I've AIed heifers a little earlier (just because that works out best for the setup we have of a community AI program- all synchronize and AI together as one bunch with everyone helping the few days it takes)...This year I just used my own bulls and bred the heifers the same time period as the cows...

Hop , I thought you were a rancher of many years? Maybe not, just a back yard wanna be then.

OT must be a nice person as after all the crap you sling at him.....then ask for his advice...I'd tell you to sit and spin ol' boy

It is nice to see you gentlemen getting along. Kind of restores my faith in humanity. :)

In 1935 the U.S. Congress declared the first Sunday in August, Friendship Day! Since then several other countries around the world have adopted it as an international day of recognition.

What protocol are you using, the same on for both cows and heifers?

I haven't AIed cows in years....Then I use to pasture detect and breed both cows and heifers as they came in heat....

Now when we do breed some heifers we use MGA- and lutalyse- and line it up so they calve a week or two before the cows- so hopefully most of them are done when the cows start...Drawback is the weather is more likely to be nasty when the heifers calve- and several of their calves a year ago lost ears and tails...

Years ago I did just try lutalysing 20 heifers and throwing a bull in...I think if I remember right I had over half that calved in about a week period while the others drug on til later...
I've thought of doing that again with the heifers- but it means one more time of handling- and I'm trying to get as low input as possible...

I'm getting more and more to just handling the heifers like the cows...They have to grow up quick- and make it or break it on their own...
