Efforts Underway to Expand Beef Trade With Japan
USAgNet - 08/01/2007

USDA Secretary Mike Johanns will meet with Japan's agriculture minister in Washington D.C. this week to discuss efforts to expand U.S. beef exports. The agenda for the meeting to take place on Thursday includes beef trade, but was also designed to help the two officials get to know each other better.

The Bush Administration has made it a priority to convince Japan to accept a broader range of U.S. beef exports. Last year, Japan partially lifted the ban on U.S. beef, that was put in place in 2003 when the first mad cow disease popped up in the U.S.

Japan currently accepts beef from cattle up to 20 months old, but the U.S. wants to see beef from older cattle traded as well. U.S. officials hope the World Organization for Animal Health's "controlled risk" status granted to the U.S. in May will help further open trade.

I think if you search a little more you will find out they wanted it in writing that they would get, "USA beef (origin) only" and when they (US trade negotiators) wouldn't put it in writing, they've not agreed nor have they imported any.

Maybe the Japanese would be more receptive if we had a "negligble risk" OIE status like what we qualify for. Oooops, I forgot, then the USDA wouldn't be able to say that we have the same risk as Canada in their arguements to open the border.....

Maybe if the USDA followed basic business logic and atually tried to supply what the customer wanted.... Ooops, I forgot, we have the new selectively enforced requirement of sound science....

Japanese Ag Minister Resigns, Delaying Washington Beef Talks

Scandal-ridden Japanese Agriculture Minister Norihiko Akagi resigned Wednesday, derailing a meeting set for Thursday with USDA Secretary Mike Johanns on beef exports to Japan.

Environment Minister Masatoshi Wakabayashi will double as minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries for the time being, according to Japanese media reports, but he won't be replacing Akagi in Washington this week.

The talks, which were to cover a number of topics with beef trade high on the list, have not been rescheduled, a USDA spokewoman told Meatingplace.com. (See Japan's ag minister coming to America on Meatingplace.com, July 27, 2007.)

Akagi, accused of expense account irregularities, had only held the office since June when he replaced Toshikatsu Matsuoka who committed suicide following money and bribery scandals.

Akagi told reporters he resigned to take responsibility for his scandal's role in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's devastating defeat in the recent House of Councilors election.

A certain pair of cows from Alabama and Texas took care of that. :!: Therefore you have the same risk, as much as you'd like to ignore that fact.

You're wrong, Kato. There's a cut-off age of 11 years on positive cases. Both of our cases were over that age and thus over the cut-off. Most of your cases are not - and it only takes one.
