A Wetumpka woman was arraigned and charged with 10 counts of health care fraud in which she allegedly stole almost $1 million from Alabama Medicaid, according to U.S. Attorney George L. Beck Jr.
Lashawn Denise Anthony, 41, is charged with committing health care fraud through her business, Youth Enhancement and Family Services, Inc.
Her business was listed as a non-profit corporation to provide psychotherapy services to students and families as part of the Medicaid Program in the state.
The program was designed to provide counseling to children with behavioral problems as well as to give their families living skills training, according to Beck.
“The Medicaid Program is in place to provide health care for needy families,” Beck said. “Anyone who fraudulently bills Medicaid, drives up the cost of Medicaid. This limits the ability of the Alabama Medicaid Agency to provide medical care to those in need.”
Beck said fraud occurred when Anthony falsely billed claims as if a psychologist with a doctoral degree actually provided the services when, in fact, the therapist who performed the service had a master’s degree.
In July 2010 Alabama Medicaid sent out billing instructions that explained how to bill Medicaid for services provided with a master’s degree.
After receiving the instructions, Anthony falsely billed Medicaid and got more money from it than what she was actually due.
Each count of health care fraud carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
Anthony’s trial is set for April.
