I'm looking for work in the cattle industry, how do I get started? I have no real experience, but my great grampa used to work on a ranch out in Arizona and he's always been sort of an idol of mine. I know this probably sounds kinda idealistic or childish, but this is something I'm very serious about. thanks.

You'll have to start at the bottom. Try any farm or ranch that needs labor. Don't be suprised to be mucking out pens or fencing or whatever needs doing. Try Sale Barns or feed stores. If you have a big enough want to, you'll find something that will allow you to get experience as you go. Good luck and WELCOME! :D

Looks to me like the bottom at your place is well above the bottom someplace else. 8)

Like I said I meant that literally. I found lost of places that will let me volunteer my time, but not any that want to hire me.

and perhaps that would look good on your resume AND give you more experience....just sayin'

Saleiri, What kind of a background do you have? The cattle industry is tough to get started at even though you are brought up in it and already know the ropes. If you give some qualifications and they answer to demands for being a dependable, energetic, healthy, personable fellow there is always an opening in ranch country somewhere for a job. If you can prove yourself there are opportunities to work into managerial positions.or partnerships. Good luck!

My first job I had outside of my family was on a ranch in south fla. I was raise to work had and did. I could fix and put up fence as good as it could be done and could run a tractor just as well. It wernt long before I ran the fence crew and before long was advance to the cow crew where I really wonted to be. Just go around to the sale barns and hand out some cards. Let them know what u won't to do and be a eager learner. Don't be one that waits around to to be told what to do. Hit the sale barns then go to the ranches. If u can catchin while there busy, talk real quick and give them a card. Then offer them your help for free to try out and be dressed to get dirty. People will find a job for a good worker.
