Hurtin' today

Yesterday, I worked over at the best friend's, sorting and hauling cattle. He runs a mixed breed herd of cows, Black Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Red Angus, Gelbveih, and Simmental. Little bit of everything. I've always watched myself around the blacks and Chars, never worried about the rest. Everything went fine till the second load of cows we were loading. I was pushing cows up the chute with his Dad, and one didn't want to go, so I lightly tapped her on the ass with the papers I had in my hand to get her attention to move up with the rest. CRRAACK! That was her back foot connecting with my leg! My leg went completely numb for at least five minutes as a wave of pain came over me, and I fought to keep standing. My leg swelled instantly, and today I have a HUGE purple bruise on my leg that's about a little bigger then the size of her hoof. Lucky for me she didn't break my leg. Lucky for her she didn't break my leg. Come fall, when it's time to bring them home, I'll be gunnin' for her! And the part that p***** me off about thw whole deal is, SHE WAS A HEREFORD!!!!

When we buy pregnant recips, they come in all diffrent types of cows. Seems that the herfs can be just as cantankerous if not more than anything else. Had one last year that wouldn't let you within 80 yds of her calf for about 3 weeks. Can't get those calves weaned quick enough and the old cow to the sale barn.

When I worked at the auction mart I noticed more people got hurt by gentle cows than bulls because they took the Herford pet cow types for granted.
Actually nobody ever got hurt by the bulls.

Last week I was at the salebarn when they brought in one Hereford cow- she had little horns that curled up and foward--she had guys going over fences, behind barriers and every which way....

Brought back old memories of when half the cattle in the country looked just like her- and had the same attitude....

You better watch those big hemotomas on the thigh. I know a fella on the show road that got one then got kicked again in the same place. Had to have it drained I think and couldn't do much for awhile.

Becareful girl, you probably gonna hafta get you some liquid pain killer now :D Normally those herf's wont kick like these blacks will, lotta lady ranchers like keepin them because they are easier to handle than some of these X bred brangus, was helpin a neighbor lady load some of hers few weeks ago,you could catch em by the ear and pull em around they were so gentle but.........I still did'nt get behind one close enough to get kicked..............good luck
PS hope you get ta feelin better.

If you use warm vinegar compress on that bruise it will help it with the swelling and it will also break up the blood in the bruise and it will go away a bit faster.

I didn't believe it either till I got whacked on the thigh once....use the compress every day for about an hour....it will work. Something about the acid in the vinegar works on the proteins in the blood.....

Just a tip!!!

Shelly---amazing how much stress your leg bones can handle...had my mustang roll with me about 8 years back and when he rolled over, I tried to scurry out from under him but my right leg was pinned...got the middle of my calf with the saddle horn...did like your leg and swelled up and turned some pretty colors, but NO break!!!
Another "natural" remedy to try for the bruising and bleeding is Arnica...can find it in any natural food place and most pharmacies!! Works wonders...even the hubby trusts it!!
Good luck to you in healing up....wish I could see you come your next meeting with the hold gal!!

Thank you for helping me yesterday,Shelly.I will have to take you out for supper one night, when things slow down a little bit.Sorry you had to get kicked though  !!Not that i wanted you to get kicked, but if you were going to get kicked i'm glad it wasn't one of my blacks cows that kicked you.I know how you hereford breeders, would never let me live that down  .You would probably never help me again either. It was a good thing your leg didn't get broke, and your right. It was lucky for her she didn't break your leg,i think my temper would have got the best of me  .

Just tell your Dad he's going to owe me, seeing as it was his cow. Maybe a little black roan out of that Shorthorn heifer he bought last winter........??? As for helping you again, just ask. I actually had a blast!

Shelly, that hurts so bad. :( Sorry ya got kicked, and hope ya get well real soon. kolanuraven is right about the vinegar compresses......they are also great for a sprain!

Al's Char heifer took out my knee when she was just a weaner (3 years ago now).....he had her tied to the fence, and somehow, she got the halter off. We put it back on fairly easily (which surprised the heck outta me, cause she was wild as a March hare  ) and I was standing beside her, petting her a little, telling her what a good girl she was and everything.

All of a sudden, she cow-kicked me, right in the kneecap. My leg bent backwards, and it was all I could do, to make it the two or three steps to the hay rack, to hang onto it, while the nausea passed. Bad thing is, everytime I step wrong, that knee will bend backwards........or if I ride too long, when I get off, it will do the same thing.

Shelly just prop it up in the "robin's Nest and I'll buy you some pie next time through. I'm sure the uber waitress will keep you entertained as you convalesce.
