Had a calf get into one a couple of years ago. Don't know how she did it, but she had them all under her chin and almost up to her neck.
Got the vet out and he got most of them out. She had lost alot of ground and never did catch up.

Wow. I never seen a cow with needles in her nose other than in science books. That looks like it hurt! DO cows just go to sniff the porky, or do the porkies play offense?

So do we

I think our mother cows go after them if they get too close to their calves, yearlings I think just get too close out of curiosity. I have no idea how this cow got quills on her udder

Maybe the porky thought the bar served chocolate milk and protested? :D
That was a wonderful job to clean that up I'll bet. They say ranch life is an easy and carefree one!

When I worked at the vet clinic we had a client who had a pair of Akitas who just didn't learn. I think they liked to go back for revenge instead. He had them in so many times for quill removal it was crazy. They wouldn't come in with just a few quills either, they would be pincushions. One day we added up how much he had spent on this, and it came close to $1800.00. Not too sure who it was who wasn't learning, the dogs or the owner.

He solved the problem by moving away to somewhere without porcupines.

on young dogs we found they learned from the experience if we pulled enough quills they could eat and drink without any problem and the rest of the quills could make them uncomfortable for a week or so until they festered and came out. if we just hauled them in to get completely cleaned up they didn't seem to remember.

I hate porkies too,we've pulled many a quill. The foals seem to be the worst in being curious.... :?

Hanta....THAT looks like there was no fun in that pulling job...!!!
