I have a question President obama

obama: "But right now, the key is to make sure that the public is following instructions. For those of you who still need additional information about how to respond, you can go to Ready.gov -- that’s Ready.gov."

Chris Mathews, from the back of the room: "Mr President, for those without power, thus no internet, is there a particular tv station these people should be tuned to?"

obama: "thanks for bringing that up Chris. I suggest tuning to MSNBC, for the latest information, if you are without power"

(the 1st obama quote is actual, the questioner is not, but maybe should have been)

Correct. After a few hours when the batteries need recharging and there is no power they are useless.

only until the batteries wear out.

but most, if they have a land line telephone could still make a call to a FEMA hotline, I guess, but...

A call to FEMA’s news desk, however, found even they didn’t have any non-Internet information readily available beyond suggestions that people call 911 in an emergency. When asked where folks should turn for information if they have no power, a FEMA worker said, “Well, those people who have a laptop with a little battery life on it can try that way. Otherwise, you’re right.”

“That’s a problem,” said Matt Thome, spokesman for the Safe America Foundation, a non-profit disaster preparedness advocacy organization based in Marietta, Ga. “As we get further away from a time when people aren’t relying on smartphones to do everything for them, people are going to lose focus that not everyone’s going to connect to the Internet. What happens when it goes down? That basic level of preparedness has been lost.”

yes in some case.. cell towers need power.. right now reception and coverage is spottie to say the least... about half my calls went to voice-mail,.. and I had numerous missed calls when my phone was on and in my pocket..

as for laptops.. you need a signal.. usually from a router which needs power.. and you need a provider.. which needs power...

locally Comcast was one of the major providers.. they were in and out throughout the storm.. I have Verizon but I wasn't at home... it appeared to stay on because my call forwarding worked well..

where I was at didn't have Verizon and often didn't have any internet service.. cell service was not great and we had either power or a generator for most of the storm.. but then I didn't need help... most folk needing help don't have the luxury of their own generator.

of the methods of communicating, I would say internet was the least accessible for me during the storm..

most of those I talked to at hotels suffered massive outages and many of the shelters were without power..

and that's why many were grabbingg it wherever they could.

probably to check out obama's website, would be my guess.

Maybe if they had power at home, they could have checked the website obama mentioned and learned they should be staying home.
