I need help with ideas on entertaining some young ladies

We are expecting Ms. Alabama’s nieces for a few months this summer. Their dad is in Iraq now and their momma will be deploying this summer. Dad won’t be back until late summer so the girls will be staying with us on the farm. They are 15 and 17 so I just don’t know how to keep them busy all summer. They have come and stayed a few days before and everything was new so I was able to keep them busy. I thought about trying to find a horse for then to ride and feed and stuff but I don’t keep a horse. I wonder if I can rent one for a while.
Mid summer, there is not much for them to do with the cattle and I don't think they would want to work in the hay field.

I am looking for some ideas on entertaining the young ladies this summer.

I think a horse...or two is a great idea. Are they experienced riders at all? That'd be my first concern. If they are.....horse market is a buyers market right now, so ya might look into that in the spring so your not havin to feed em/them thru the winter.

Fishin.......bleave it or not, most girls love fishin.

Or squirrel huntin....ya just never know....talk to them from now until then and ask what things they'd like to do...anything new they'd like to try that has to do with your part of the world. Prime opportunity for you to make a lasting impression on young minds.....take advantage of it.

Well they ask Ms Alabama if we had a horse last time they came out and seemed disappointed that we didn’t. I don’t think they have ever ridden before and I won’t be around all the time to watch them. I also do not want to buy and horses. I could keep some for a while in a two-acre weaning pin behind the house. Humm. I could try and find someone giving lessons close by and send them over there to ride but then they miss out on taking care of the horse.
They had big fun last time feeding cows and spraying them for flies. They also got to cut grass on the riding mower.

Fishing? We have a few ponds around they can fish in and they can dig worms down in the catch pin. Thanks for the ideas and please keep them comming.

How about girls softball or a summer sport.... Riding lessons sounds great to me and I think they have to do some of the chores.... Gardening?? Are they prissy??

It always amazes me when Lil Lilly has friends that come stay over night or thru the weekend that don't have access to open spaces. They love it..no matter what it is she finds for them to do...whether it's ridin, swimmin in the tanks, 4 wheelin, whatever. They don't wanna go home when it's time.
Somethin else that seems to go over good is lettin them help cook....so many parents these days don't take the time to show em or help......Let them pick one meal a week and cook it from start to finish......Yes it'll be a mess....but well worth the clean up time. LOL

They ain't prissy, but they are city girls. They have played softball before but did not play last summer. I don't know why. One was an allstar. They are good girles and make fair grades in school.
Gardening might be good. We raise a big garden every year but I do most of it with the tractor. We just pick by hand.
I am sure I can find them somthing to keep fed.

Those were my thoughts Katrina!!! Great minds must think alike, eh? I'll also add in, how about some sheep?

I think the gardening idea is a great one too. Maybe they can raise a little extra and sell it for some spending money. How about canning and making jams/jellies out of their produce? Learning "home preservation" has endless returns, and also could save them some $$$ in their adult lives.

Another idea that comes to mind is putting together a scrapbook of their time with you, and also of their parent's experiences...I'm not much of a scrapbooker...but I bet there are ladies on here with ideas galore in that arena.

I'll try and think of more...maybe Red Robin has ideas...I don't know that I've ever been around a more polite set of girls (and you know he has 5 of them!!!) than his and Mrs. Red Robin's. Lazy Ace and I tried to get him to leave the oldest, as it seems she likes cleaning up and doing dishes!

Please thank the young ladies' folks for serving our country, and also let them know that they are in our thoughts and prayers, along with the other ranchers.net family members over there defending our freedoms.

Cheers---

TTB

Photos, scrapbook, canning, selling corn and squash in town, I just knew y'all would come up with something. They will be on the farm alone most days and I think they can do all that stuff unassisted.
That is a good start for them and should help them come up with other ideas.
I will need to open the back of the house back up this winter to get ready for them. I closed off the back three bedrooms and bathroom several years ago. But it won't take much to get it going again. All I know I need is a new water heater. The one for that bathroom went out a few months back and I have not replaced it yet. I bet two teenage girls can use lots of hot water.

Maybe those girls should watch the television show "The Simple Life". Paris and Nicole could give them ideas of what to do in a simple country environment. :)

Be ready to wean yourself from Ranchersnet because if they are anything like our grandkids they'll be wanting to use a computer. The last time we went to babysit our second grade grandson he wanted to learn the program I use to make DVDs from phhotos and videos- it amazed me how content he was to well- just take over the whole deal  he'd been watching me earlier and had learned how to select transitions, make title slides etc.
They are a whole different generation.

So maybe in the evening they'd like to download the photos they take of their ranch activities and make DVD's with musical backgrounds and special effects etc. They could send those to their folks in Iraq.

If you take Soap's advice here you might want to go out and buy a supersized carton of condoms.

Alabama-----let's ask demodriver about 15 and 17 year old girls....yep, she says MUSIC, TV, OTHER TEENAGE GIRLS, TEENAGE BOYS and HORSES!! What are some of the historical areas around you? Take them to see lots and lots and take lots and lots of pictures!! My girl is somewhat of a history fanatic and would LOVE to be down in your neck of the woods so that she can get a picture of what the "old south" must have been like!! If they get really really bored and you are not sure what to do next....let me suggest......SEND THEM MY WAY!!! We have lots of room, horses, cows, dogs, another teenage daughter (who will be spending her last summer here before heading off to med school  ), a garden and a HUGE fort that the hubby is constructing for the kids!!!

Alabama, wow you are lucky to be able to have these girls stay with you,I'd love that. One thing you have to remember these girls will have thier parents on the back of there minds so may be sullen at times. Our daughter lived outside from morning to night. A horse for sure will keep them entertained and thier minds and hearts elsewhere, yup you'll have boys too, like you know theres a built in radar, new girl in area boys from 30 miles away will know it...lol Have a great time with them :)

I raised a daughter so I know about boys. I also know how to keep the wrong ones run off. But nothing wrong with a few good boys stopping by when I am home to visit the girls. As long as they stay in plane sight like sitting in the swings in the front yard.

Thank y'all for all the great ideas. I am sure we will be fine.
