I ruined some more leather!

The seat piece. I still have to tool the part where my butt goes.

Ya know, it could just be me, but I kinda like it like it is.........but I'm not into too fancy of stuff, anyway. Looks like it could be easier to stay in the seat, too, like it is. For that reason, I always wanted to replace my padded saddle seat with roughout or suede.

But I do like the way you "ruin leather"!!!!!!!

just need to clarify ONE LITTLE thing, JB......in your initial post, you said the saddle was special because it was for YOU.....I was under the definite impression that the next one was for ME!!!!!!
you are truly talented and look forward to some pix of you and the saddle when all is finished!!! :D :D

Oh, excuse me. when you said the check was in the mail, I thot you were joking.

If I ever get it done, I'll post some pix. :)

Thank you all, for the kind comments.

If you have a padded seat, by all means get it taken out. All they do is ketch trash and hold any water that gets on them.

I've never had a rough out, tho' I've built a saddle like that. A neighbor boy bought a saddle with a roughout seat and then came and ordered a saddle without a padded seat and sure didn't want roughout. He said that it sored his legs. I always thot it would also. I would suggest glue, to grip better, or perhaps, poligrip.

I think there is a difference in some of the 'roughout' Jinglebob.

Mr. FH rides roughout seat, but his has been laid down. It isn't rough
like some you see. (I think they call it 'laid down'.) Been a long time
since his saddle was new, but it never bothered him. It was made
by Gale Jerome.

I can't ride a slick seated saddle. I just can't, it kills my butt. I need a ruff out with some padding. Not a lot but some. The Buck Steiner I have is the first saddle I've ever owned that didnt have a padded seat. I've not rode it all that much, but when I have it's done ok, but not great. For those of us with no padding of our own, padded saddle seats are a God send LOL :P

Hubby has some poligrip, maybe I'll have to sneak a little and try it.....or find a nice, smooth moving caballo instead of these old rough cobs we have now.......

My saddle is one that my great aunt (almost 101 years old) had made by her (then) son-in-law, Cotton Estes back in the 50s. It's got antique value, just because of the age. Her husband had one made at the same time, just like hers. They always looked so nice, riding their matching saddles! :)

We're working to restore my dad's old saddle (he got it when he was a teenager, he turned 69 yesterday) that has been rained on and pretty well weathered over the years. Do you know any product to put on the fenders, etc. to take the "curl" out and make the leather nice and soft again?

Speakin of saddles, this brings up somethin I've meant to ask. Has anyone ever heard of a Vega Saddle? I think the saddlemaker's name is Frank Vega. I can't find very much information online, other than stuff about him making english saddles and hunter jumpers. I'm perdy sure he's from Texas but not positive.
