Ice breakers: Texans and John Deere

We just returned from mr. nr's conference in Philadelphia where I bumped into some gracious Texan ladies. All I had to do to get acquainted was mention okra and they had more ideas to share on cooking it than you could shake a stick at. they could have chatted all night. Same was true about meeting an Iowa farmer/business man. when I mentioned John Deere tractors that you ranchers practically immortalize in song and sighs, he was I think extremely happy to talk about something other than engineering for a change. His face really lit up about those green machines!

Well shoot! You could have talked about fixin' fence orfeedin' cows or somethin' interesting, besides them dumb ol' tractors. Especially JD's.

Didn't you know, only snobs own JD's?

Sorry. I didn't catch that finer point. Are you sure bout that Jinglebob? Clarence isn't a snob for one. And the Iowa guy wasn't either.

as is his custom which i missed in first reading. some of us (moi) should stay off the net in the AM.

To be perfectly clear, most people who own those things, think they are the best and those who don't own them are beanth them or at best, just ain't saved up enough money yet. Some of us think that they are overpriced for what you get. :)

BUT, the people who think they are overpriced for what you get, don't have one!!!! :p

(Sorry, just could not resist.)

We never owned a John Deere until about 1994. Since then we have had 3 front wheel assists. (One at a time, of course. )

We only own one tractor so try to keep it fairly new. Mr. FH doesn't farm
but he puts quite a few hours on that one tractor in a year. He sure does
like the JD, by the way. (And he definitely is not a snob.)

The thing about JD, at least around here, is if you are buying new you have to be nuts not to by JD.. The prices, if you work the dealers, are about the same and the resale value blows the NH, Agco, Case out of the water... There in lies the problem.. If you buy Blue you are basically going to have to stay Blue. If you buy green you have options without getting taken to the bank...

All that being said, I am a cheap guy who buys used so I look for color besides green... Than the boss steps in and buys green.. Pain in my arse.

We only have two tractors on our place...ones a garden tractor, both green. We've tried others but Greg goes back to JD,says he can work on them and swears they are not overpriced. Mind you hes a heavy duty mechanic that took lots of his training in Regina at John Deere place there.A little brainwashed maybe?? I love my garden tractor though!!

You know why JD's are green.....So they can hide in the grass and watch real tractors work...
thing is they work better then my other tractors.

ACtually, you want t see overpriced around here it is Cat... Good god the guys who run Cat Lexicon combines are getting out of them real fast now as 1) they costed a lot ot begin with and 2) iff anything goes wrong the mechanics are expensive and far aways and so are the parts...

Deer has the advantage over here if for no other reason the dealer network can really work for you. I can't tell you how many different dealers there are within an hour to work with and have price things against each other. We don't have that advantage with the other companies....Still, looking at a piece of iron right now and I have geen and non green options for the new/used baler and the tractor.... Staying away from green on the tractor will save me 30% probably on that piece of Iron....The balers are closer in price but Deere might actually be cheaper than the New holland and Vermeer...
