Grand Jury Protesters: If You Like Your Big Government, You Can Keep It
By Ebben Raves
It is interesting to watch the aftermath of the Eric Garner Grand Jury decision coming so soon after Ferguson. “White Police Officer Once Again Kills Unarmed Black Man – And Gets Away with It” is already the reaction in many places. Sides are drawn and the usual suspects race-bait, pontificate, riot and ask for calm, or in Jesse Jackson’s case, donations.
Other than there being a white police officer and a black man dying while resisting arrest, these cases are not similar, no matter what many would like you to believe. In one instance, the Grand Jury determined that Officer Wilson killed Michael Brown in self-defense. Although so far we have not been privy to the evidence in the Garner decision, the video is fairly compelling that none of the officers’ lives were in jeopardy.
So what did Eric Garner do to cause his death? Apparently, he was suspected of selling loose cigarettes. In New York City. What if he were selling large sodas? Or salt packets? He probably would have met the same fate, because he was “resisting arrest.”
We are already seeing protests, soon to be ramped up once the professional agitators arrive. We’ll see pre-printed signs lamenting Eric Garner’s death and demanding justice. Some New Yorkers will be screaming for the Federal Government to step in. But why? After all, he was supposedly a smoker, or at least enabling smoking. Maybe even a salter and large soda drinker. They hate those people. They must, since they pass laws and elect politicians that either tax these items out of reach or simply eliminate them. They wanted more government and Eric Garner got it.
The non-professional protesters do not seem to understand that the police enforce laws that citizens are compelled to obey. The same laws that are passed by elected officials they voted for, usually with the resounding approval of a majority of the electorate. The non-professional protesters also do not seem to understand that you will do what the police command. If you resist hard enough, you will die. Sometimes, unfortunately, hard enough can be hardly at all. The non-professional protesters should not complain. They always seem to want more government. Apparently, no one told them that the police are government. This has nothing to do with good cops and bad cops. Police frequently deal with life and death situations where there is…life and death. This also not about Eric Garner’s past, only what is known to the public about the incident being addressed.
Would it be far-fetched to assume that the professional agitators will see this as an opportunity? Not just in the race-baiting, shakedown, riot-for-profit way, but a chance to give many Americans just what they want: more government. Our president has announced that he will seek funding for more local police training and body cameras, while at the same time his fellow travelers are doing all they can to demean the police. Body cameras may help, but this whole Garner episode was on video. What then? Well, to some it is obvious that if local government cannot control the police, they need to be federalized. Do not be surprised if this is proposed in the near future. The usual talking heads will ask why no one has thought of this before and credit the president with finding a solution to something that has become a “scourge” on our society. They may even nominate him for another Nobel Prize, with the full backing of the United Nations. That would be wonderful! Everyone who carries a gun and wears either a badge or a uniform taking orders from the executive branch -- from the president himself! What could go wrong?
The president himself -- currently, the same president who decides which laws to enforce and against whom to enforce them. The same president who even makes up his own laws when he feels a need. Today, if you like your soda, salt and cigarettes, you can move out of New York City. Tomorrow, depending on who you are, of course, you may be denied those things, and many others. Don’t resist, either. So, before you ask for, “More government, please!” think about Eric Garner.
