Record-High 40% of Americans Identify as Independents in '11

More Americans identify as Democrats than as Republicans, 31% to 27%
by Jeffrey M. JonesPRINCETON, NJ --

The percentage of Americans identifying as political independents increased in 2011, as is common in a non-election year, although the 40% who did so is the highest Gallup has measured, by one percentage point. More Americans continue to identify as Democrats than as Republicans, 31% to 27%.

except that other later surveys show differently.....Dems have been jumping ship ever since obama was sworn in.....

In November, 36.0% of American Adults identified themselves as Republicans; 34.7% considered themselves Democrats, and 29.3% were not affiliated with either major party. That's the largest number of Republicans since February 2005 and the first time ever that Rasmussen Reports polling has found more people identifying as Republicans than Democrats. …

In November 2008, following the presidential election, Democrats held a 7.6 percentage point advantage over the GOP. That means Republicans have picked up a net of approximately nine points over the past two years. That is a somewhat larger gain compared to the Democratic gains from the reelection of President Bush in 2004 to the Democratic takeover of Congress in 2006. However, it is similar to the gains recorded by Democrats during the four-year period from Election 2004 to Election 2008.

Keep hoping OT.........

For the second week in a row, a generic Republican candidate holds a four-point lead over President Obama in an Election 2012 matchup, this time for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 8.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 47% of Likely U.S. Voters would support the generic Republican candidate if the presidential election were held today, while 43% would vote for Obama. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and seven percent (7%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Gallup Poll: Conservatives Outnumber Moderates
Friday, 13 Jan 2012 12:55 PM

By Andra Varin

Conservatives are the biggest ideological group in the United States, outnumbering moderates for a third straight year and far outpacing liberals, according to a Gallup Poll released Friday.

The poll found 40 percent of Americans described their views in 2011 as conservative, compared to 35 percent who said they were moderates, and 21 percent who identified themselves as liberal.

Gallup said the percentage of Americans who call themselves moderate has been gradually dropping since 1992, when it was 43 percent. It has been at 35 percent since 2010.

Over the past decade, "the country became more politically polarized, with the percentages of Americans calling themselves either 'conservative' or 'liberal' each increasing," the pollster said.

The 2011 results are based on 20 Gallup and USA Today/Gallup surveys taken between January and December 2011. A total of 20,392 adults were interviewed. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percent.
