Injured horse (updated pictures)

He's still at the vets, went to see him yesterday, they are still keepin him wrapped tight, but the swellin is gone. He's not wantin to put weight on it right now, they said there's a small slivver of bone that's "dead". They can't get it to flake off yet, said it would take a few more days for it to do that kinda on it's own. They clean it twice a day so are on top of any changes. She (the lady vet) said that the actual wound is lookin a whole lot better, just gonna take time. He doesn't have any infection in the bone now either.

Hey, how's this horse doing?
Had an arab stallion take out a 6' board fence and cruise to the neighbor's after a mare in January of '88, he took out a barbed wire fence somewhere in the woods, and I found him the next afternoon with a VERY SIMILAR cut, yellow foamy stuff and all. The vet cleaned it up, and said he'd be fine, but I'd never ride him, which sucked, 'cause he was only 3 at the time. LOTS of Pennicillin, Furazone spray, a million bandage changes, miles and miles of hand-walking, and we finished 2nd in a 55 mile endurance race that June, 5 months to the day of the injury. (Lost to a mare in heat, go figure! Still trying to figure out what Mom and Dad were thinking back then, to let a 105# kid ride a greenbroke stallion, now that I know better, LOL!)

He's still at the vets. Same routine every day. They are moving him to an outdoor pen in the next couple of days as one comes available. So sounds like he's gettin around a lil better than he was. Still keeping the pressure bandages on him all the time.
No word yet as to when he'll get to come home.

We brought him back to his home (not our home) about a week and a half ago. He can't put weight on the leg at all...or won't. He would for a few days at the vets..then he wouldn't. It went back and forth. He eats and drinks fine. Can do anything you ask him to do hoppin on 3 legs. If it were up to me I'd have put the horse down. But the owner still wants to give him a chance. Leg injuries can take so long to heal. The actual wound looks perdy good. Still keeping it wrapped, changing bandages....hand walkin/hoppin him every day....But I don't know that he'll ever be able to walk on it??? Since he's not our horse it's not our place to make the decision. He doesn't seem to be in pain. Doesn't bother him when you change the bandage etc......so I guess we'll see.

Lilly is there still alot of new growth on the wound? If it's still covering over some days I'm sure it feels pinchy and other days it wouldnt. Don't give up on him yet, you just never know. If he was in pain I would day to put him down but if they feel he isnt that uncomfortable well hey? Who knows :)

Oh yeah it's still covering. I'll try to take a picture of it the next bandage change and show ya'll. Still quite a bit of uncovered area...but the "meat" looks wonderful.
He's always excited to get a halter on and go for his walks/hops LOL Never refuses to do anything you want him to. Still in good condition, hasn't lost too much weight. He was butterball fat when it happened. I don't always go out there with Mr Lilly and Lil Lilly, but I'll make a point to so I can get pictures.

Lil, I thank you for sharing this story.

I do totally understand your feelings of euthanizing the horse and I do understand someone who won't give up.

I was telling someone about a horse I had to euthanize..their answer?..."Weezy that should have been done a year ago"...sometimes our vision is clouded by our heart...

Ok..here's a picture of when it happened after the vet cleaned it...just figured it would be easier to compare then and now with the pictures on the same page. Picture on the right is today before it was rewrapped.

Looks a lot better but still.. yuck..... Suprised the other legs aren't having problems with him having to put all his weight on just the three.. Hard for the horse when you think that they are putting all their weight on 4 middle finger/toe nails...

Wow, he's looking fantastic! It's amazing how well those flesh wounds heal. I have an old grey mare that has an 18 inch scar on her neck, I can only imagine just how gross it was when it first happened!
