insurance when you're self employed

I figured this would be a good place to find a lot of people that are self employed and don't have company-provided dental insurance. Do most of you have dental insurance? Is it worth having or is it cheaper in the long run to go without? A dentist told me once it usually doesn't pay unless you have some really good deal offered to you at work (free). I'm not talking about kids' insurance, I'm asking if you have it on yourselves. I've looked at some plans online but they don't pay for much til you've had the policy quite a while.

I had a policy at work, but it really wasn't insurance. It paid up to $1000 total for the year and the only way it paid for itself is if we had some expensive work that needed done. I cancelled it.

I inquired to both a dentist and an insurance and both said about what you found out. Unless you are gonna have something major done it's really expensive to carry.
