Insurgents Defeated

>Senate Democrats were doing the work of the Islamic jihadists yesterday ... right there on the floor of the United States Senate. Led by Michigan's Carl Levin, these loyal Democrats tried to force President Bush to engage in a staged surrender to Islamic terrorist "insurgents" in Iraq. The idea was to force George Bush to set a virtual timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.
Throughout the entire history of the United States, our military forces have never prevailed in any conflict where there was a time limit placed on their efforts. A time limit only helps the enemy. The insurgents would be able to pull back their forces, and just wait the coalition troops out. As the withdrawal date approached the insurgents would prepare for their assault on the institutions and people of Iraq. In short order Iraq would be under the control of Islamic jihadists and would become virtual headquarters for Islamic terrorism around the world.
Above all, Democrats realize this. They know exactly what a withdrawal timetable would do. They know -- but their hatred of George Bush and their continuing rage over two close elections drives them to take these actions ... even knowing, as Joseph Lieberman said, that the action
"would discourage our troops, encourage the terrorists and confuse the Iraqis."

So ... yesterday's battle in the war on terror was fought right here in Washington. Thankfully, the terrorists lost.

If you say the Senate calling for responsibility from the Bush White House on Iraq means the terrorist won, they did. Yes, the Senate voted down the Dems proposal, mostly along party lines. (I really expect that to be brought up in the campaigns next year .) But the Republican senators came up with their own plan to require reports on the progress of the war in Iraq. More spin on your part. In fact, this is a worse case for Bush because it's a Republican plan. He can't even claim it's a political ploy. Looks like a no-win situation for Bush.

"The Republican-controlled Senate overwhelmingly approves a proposal calling on the Bush administration to provide Congress with more extensive reporting on the progress of the war in Iraq and a schedule for meeting a series of goals, aiming for a "phased redeployment of U.S. forces from Iraq."
