Iowa Cattlemen's Association Faces Shortfall In Money, Membership

KCCI 8 Des Moines

September 26, 2006

Iowa (IA), US

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Cattleman's Association faces budget cuts and member discontent just as the state's beef industry is poised for a comeback.

The group is cutting $260,000, or nearly a fourth, from its budget for next year. It blames shortfalls in membership and in money from a checkoff program used to promote beef.

President Leon Yantis said the cuts will mean the elimination of an unknown number of staff positions at its headquarters in Ames.

Iowa cattle producers are trying to ride a wave of increased ethanol production. Using distillers' dried grains, a cheap byproduct of the ethanol-making process, could be a way for Iowa's cattle feeders to gain a competitive edge.

Yantis said membership in the group is down to about 10,300, instead of an expected 11,000.

Another negative article for Oldtimer to click his heels and rub his hands with glee over!

It is always puzzling when some people take satisfaction watching others go through difficult times for whatever reason especially when it means a loss of jobs. It says alot of your character or lack of it Oldtimer.

From the Kansas Cattlemen's Association Newsletter;

"........Membership in Iowa is up at least tenfold compared to a year ago, according to R-CALF USA Iowa membership chair Eric Nelson."

Don't worry, Bill, it looks like R-CALF affiliate Independent Cattlemen of Iowa will be hiring.

Pretty foolish comment, Bill. Did you notice, "Iowa Cattlemans Association is an affiliate of the National Cattlemans Beef Association (NCBA)."? These state orgs. are affiliates of either NCBA or R-CALF. You can generally tell which they are affiliated with by the gain or loss from their membership rolls.

The only thing foolish is expecting An arm of R-Klan to tell the truth.

The R-CALF Glee Club members should provide us with their numbers in IA.

What does the statement "Membership in Iowa is up at least tenfold compared to a year ago, according to R-CALF......" really tell us????

Did they start with one member and now have ten? Ten members and now have a hundred? Just a strong guess, but I think they would have printed the actual numbers if they had gone from 100 to 1000!

Wouldn't a good journalist have searched out the non-members of ICA to find out why they have dropped out? There are many reasons for members to leave an organization other than dissatisfaction, after all!

The 'reporter' should have stated what the program was that is going to go unfunded in Iowa.

If it is Beef Quality Assurance, which is most likely, that will be a terrible loss to IA cattle producers and to the consumer, ultimately.

The absolute worst lapse in good journalism was the failure of the reporter to point out that such contracts with Beef Checkoff money are on a cost recovery only basis.

Certainly including that information probably would not have bothered OT's implication that ICA was making money off the checkoff, no matter that it doesn't happen unless the law is being broken, and USDA is very stringent in assuring adherence to the checkoff law.

You better get ahold of them thar folk Maxine and straighten them out- I'm sure your journalistic education and work experience is much more than theirs   ...Then you could also tell them you are an NCBA folk- and if that don't work you could always say you spent the night at a Holiday Inn Express   Probably get you more attention than the NCBA name does anymore

I thought it was the author implying that- but I'll take credit also...The article does make it look like they have been using the NCBA's "tax" to fund their office staff....

No it doesn't because once again your "facts" seem wrong.

http://icatexas.com/ If they are solely a NCBA affiliate why do they have a link to the R-Calf site and back the other way

The fact is, OT, there are lots of "watch dogs" like yourself who would be on any such illegal 'funding' like a hawk! USDA oversight is better at assuring fiscal compliance than even you are. Expenses must be approved as being within the rules of the Beef Checkoff law before being approved and paid.

The NCBA name is very well respected. And that is in spite of the fact that there is a constant barrage of false charges against NCBA in places where R-CALF minions in auction markets buy radio time, and on ranchers.net for free.

I've never claimed any education and experience as a journalist. I simply know, having observed, and also been told by some COMPETENT journalists, that there are journalists who care too little for facts and too much for making a 'good story' look better by manipulating facts to that end.

I can tell you still haven't read that report or you wouldn't have so much confidence on USDA oversight.

Sandhusker, is there, or is there not, more than one department and one supervisor at USDA?

I have met some of those who are in charge of compliance for the Beef Checkoff. Have you? Do you KNOW anything has been underhanded or illegal concerning the Beef Checkoff funds? I would want to find that out and correct it at least as much as you would. My family puts a lot of money through the Beef Checkoff and I want it used in accordance with the law. I'm sure we are not unique in that!

Is it possible that there are excellent staff in some departments, and even that there are very few departments that have HAD serious problems which, so far as you or I know, ARE BEING THOROUGHLY AND HONESTLY INVESTIGATED under new department leaders?

They are what? According to their websites it appears both NCBA and R-Calf are laying claim to the ICA of Texas.

Bill, "They are what? According to their websites it appears both NCBA and R-Calf are laying claim to the ICA of Texas."

I wonder if that letter they sent to NCBA when they were mad about the reversal of the 11 point directive had anything to do with that.

Back to where we started... Since they are a NCBA affiliate, are you going to ridicule their name like the R-CALF affiliates or is it different now?

MRJ, it seems you are happy with a few criminals in the department.

Have you read the OIG report yet?

Perhaps you only care when it is you.
