The plants are being built with the help of a conditional $8.3 billion loan guarantee from the Department of Energy. The loan guarantee is part of DOE's broader loan program that has been criticized for backing companies like Solyndra, the bankrupt maker of solar panels.

Maybe if GW had invested in the infrastucture of this country- and US workers rather than funneling our taxpayer dollars into a sandpit half way around the world and the pockets of the Mullahs he was buying off- we wouldn't have ended up with the Bush Bust- and those two new reactors could have been built years ago...

Personally I prefer my taxdollar go to the building of Nuclear Reactors in Georgia than the building of the George W Bush Super Highway in Baghdad...

they are loan guarantees.. not loans.. so we are on the hook for the bad ones, and see none of the interest payments from the paid loans..

since many of the bad loans had the risk assessment type payments waived, it is all on the taxpayer..

ROCKVILLE, Md. – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is bursting out of its headquarters in the box-store, strip-mall northwestern suburbs of Washington.

Buses shuttle among four structures where the commission has leased overflow space, but that's not enough to relieve the feel of a college that badly underestimated the size of its incoming freshman class. Portions of the main cafeteria are partitioned off before and after lunch to form makeshift conference rooms. The actual conference rooms are off limits because they've been pressed into service as offices.

The commission's beleaguered staffers call the cause of all this uproar "the tsunami." It's been 25 years since a new nuclear power plant was licensed in the United States, but applications started arriving in 2007, spurred by incentives launched during President George W. Bush's administration. By the end of this year, the Energy Department expects to have applications in hand for 31 new reactors. For each application, a couple of DVDs land at the NRC, containing tens of thousands of pages of technical data that must be scrutinized

LUSBY, Md. — President Bush visited a nuclear power plant in Maryland on Wednesday in a push to encourage the construction of new sites as part of long-stalled energy legislation in Congress, arguing that nuclear power can reduce foreign dependency on energy and help tackle emissions tied to global warming.

"It is time for this country to start building nuclear power plants again," he said to applause from employees of the Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant, located south of Washington, D.C.

"Nuclear power is one of America's safest sources of energy," he added, all "without producing a single pound of air pollution and greenhouse gases" like carbon dioxide, which many scientists tie to global warming.

Nuclear energy produces 20 percent of America's electricity needs, the president noted, saving "about as much carbon dioxide as now comes from all our cars and trucks."

Citing better training and new designs, the president said "nuclear plants are far safer than ever before ... generating electricity and protecting the environment at the same time."

The Calvert Cliffs plant is one of a six sites being considered for a new, advanced reactor. If built, it would be America's first new commercial reactor since the 1979 Three Mile Island accident.

Legislation in Congress would provide financial incentives and lawsuit protections for new nuclear power plants, an idea opposed by environmental groups. Many oppose nuclear power on principle, while a few say it shouldn't receive subsidies.

"Nuclear power poses a major security risk and produces a radioactive waste, which we have no way to store safely over the long term," Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope said shortly after Bush's speech. "It also makes absolutely no sense to waste tax dollars on new power plants when we have not secured or cleaned up the waste from existing nuclear power plants."

The Maldives has faced one day of rioting and two days more of a political standoff since Mohamed Nasheed announced Tuesday that he was resigning as president, following months of protests against his rule and fading support from the security forces. But the next day Nasheed, who now faces an arrest warrant, announced he had actually been pushed from power at gunpoint. The reality remains unclear.

Nasheed criticized Washington after the State Department said Thursday it recognized the new government as legitimate.

"It's unfortunate that the American government has decided to work with the regime," Nasheed told reporters.

Markey, D-Mass., demanded that the Energy Department provide an accurate statement of costs and schedule for the facility, and answer questions pertaining to safety complaints.

The price tag already has grown from $4.3 billion to $12.3 billion. The U.S. Department of Energy, which manages Hanford cleanup, recently announced additional costs of at least $800 million, as well as the possibility of additional delays.

"He's acting unconstitutionally under the separation of powers doctrine because he doesn't have the authority under the statute," Fitz told a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. "He had no authority to reverse it."

obama killed the pipeline, he is the only one that was responsible for the decision.

obama is the only onw that had responsibility if killing the XL pipeline, like he cancelled the storage of nuclear waste and threw all that money that had already been spent down a rabbit hole.
