Is Anyone Else Here A 4-H Leader?

I see quite a bit of talk about having your kids in 4-H, but are you also a Leader, or just a 4-H parent?

This is my 17th year as a Leader, have been Organizational Leader of our local club for 6 years. I have second seniority in our county as far as leaders go, my old Org. Leader is on her 47th year, I believe. They gave her the 40 year pin in 1999......so, yea, 47 years. She's a dear lady that I have much admiration for, and she's inspired me to hang in there, too!

I've been organizational leader for last 3 years, leader for 11.

Before this place, I was organizational leader for 2 yrs, leader for 2 yrs. If there is a kid who doesn't have a leader for one of their projects, I always step in to help them out. This goes for both 4-H clubs I've been a part of.

I  4-H

I'm pretty lucky there's a couple ladies in our club are born organizers-so they handle alot of that stuff for us. One thing about kids in 4H you don't see them in the court news very often. Several com[panies have told me that if they see 4H experience on a resume it gets moved to the top of the pile. To be honest I could do without the whole cattle show part of it-not really relevant to anything that happens in the real world but we get other people in to demonstrate clipping and such. I like to take the kids on tours of real world places-feedlots etc I think they get alot more out of it. My kids have won showmanship and judging a few times in spite of their old man lol. The end of the month were teaching the senior kids how to A.I. so that should be fun. Nice to hav e some spare arms on those big days.

NR, that's great!
We figured out a way around the show deal.
When Al signed up for the Catch A Calf program sponsored by our local CattleWomen's club, he had to sign a paper that stated: If at all possible, he would show the heifer as a bred yearling at the first county fair after he got her, and as a cow/calf pair at the second.
When time came for the first fair, he'd gotten kicked by one of his horses, and was in a cast and on crutches until after the fair was over. He got a bye for that fair.
The next year, the cow had gotten so big, and was so temperamental (especially about that calf) that we thought it best (our family, the fair board and the cattle women) if he did another indoor exhibit for the completion of that project. We sure didn't want her throwing one of her "fits" and hurting someone. Safety first.
He's signed up for the project again, just as a 4-H project instead of the catch a calf deal, and I'm trying like crazy to talk him into taking the yearling heifer to the fair, I think she'd do really well. Of course, I have the added advantage, of having seen her competition last year.
However, both years, he got the county award for cattle breeding when they judged record books. And he learned a lot about cattle in those two years.
