How did you do today rancherfred? I just missed yours.

Our customers did alright. Both groups of heifers sold as replacements and brought more than the steers in the same weight catagory, 1 of the groups went to a guy in IA and I don't know where the other group went, and we were contending bidders on 1 group of steers and got another group for a feeder in eastern SD. We have another customer selling steers tomarrow and a customer selling a bunch of bred heifers today.

$126

That is about $18 back from what we got last year but for the year we were satisfied with what we got. There was a group of heifers that sold shortly after ours that got $127. Did you see them or have any idea what drove those that high?

Congrats on your sale, sounds like you did alright.

I did see those heifers sell. They will be cows for someone. Most likely someone knew the cowherd they came from. Did you notice that the good Red Angus heifers were sold at a premium, they brought steer price for the most part. Both of our customers heifers were sold as replaements. We had a customer sell around 250 head of heifers in Northern MT, right close to the Canadian border, and they got $1.14 for them weighing 525. I was a bit concerned about them going in as they are a LONG way from a feedlot, but someone knew they would make good cows, and they brought more than the steers in that area. Good cattle are taking care of themselves.

I think the market was down a bit yesterday compared to the first day. We were contending bidders on our customers six weight steers. Some cattle sold better but as I was watching, it seemed like what sold better was either source and aged, natural, or both or had a closer trucking bill to the feedlots. The Red Angus tag is making a pretty big difference this year. Most of our buyers are asking for it and if they don't have it, is a few bucks back.

As soon as the RA calves were done selling on Tuesday the bids started dropping back again. Evidently the black fad is starting to fade for the feeders.

I don't know if I would really say the black fad is over or fading, I think it is more of a "you can get a black calf on any corner if you want" also I think that Red Angus breeders and commercial producers has had to work extremely hard to be competitive in the market and I think the quality is really starting to show. But no matter what color it is, to me the good cattle had a premium over the average and the source and aged calves also had a premium.

I don't know how that Red Angus tag works because I saw calves sell
with that tag that were anything but Red Angus.

Can you clarify that for me?

I was confused for the longest time watching too. But if you were seeing the same thing I saw, it was an advertisement on the side of the screen for the tag. I saw lots of black, whites, and everything along with Red Angus that had this ad or picture of the tag on the left side of the screen, and I am pretty sure it was just an ad whcih the Red Angus Association purchased.

The tags works like this -
either the sire or the dam must be a Regsitered Red Angus. It is a heavily audited program so pretty much true Angus, with a guarantee minumum 1/2 Red Angus.

Either the dam or the sire of the calves must be registered Red Angus. As well calving records must be kept, and the tags must be in the calves when they leave the ranch of origin. Participating herds are regularly audited.

Edited to add: Here is a link to the Certified Feeder Calf program:

FH, as a Red Angus breeder, I would be interested in what you saw.

Yeah, it's just an advertisement that's on the screen at intermittent times promoting the program. It sure is confusing when it appears while non-red cattle are being sold. I'd say that the RAAA commercial rep should see about getting that changed. Might make some folks think that it was a bunch of BS. That's not good!!

It was on the left side of the screen, I believe under the lot
number. Gosh, I don't recall things really well. Oh I recorded some of
it. I'll go check out what I recorded.

High Plains was correct. Now that I look at it again it says,
"Add value with:

then the yellow tag

and then another line " go to
www.redangus.com"

Sure glad you cleared that up, HP. All along I wondered about
that, because it happened quite a bit. I just didn't READ!!! :x

Thank you HP and FH....

As breeders, we work hard to maintain the integrity of our program. I appreciate the info., and have sent a message to Clint Berry our commercial marketing director, with a link to this post.

I don't have the opportunity to watch the sales, so it's good to hear the comments, good and bad.

Have a wonderful day!
