Have you been drinking again? You're sounding more strange than normal!
If it was your total cholesterol at 202 that isn't high. :D Maybe you should've stuck with going to the vet.

Sorry you're feeling poorly Haymaker.

If your kalestrol is like Mr. FH's, he just goes for another test
and then he's fine.

Seems to me like kalestrol rises and falls...

Just go get yourself another bottle of good drinkin' whiskey.
FWIW

Eat a bowl of oatmeal a few times a week. Oatmeal makes your good kolestral better, and yer bad kolestral lower(better).

Generally a good portion of your cholesterol is going to be based on 1) diet and 2) your genetics. Also, the overall affect on you is also going to be dictated by your genetics. Some folks carry huge levels and live long times, other folks have real low levels and have heart problems usually associated with the levels..

My Dad is a good example. His was high, probably near were yours was Haymaker and he is in pretty good shape. Exercises a lot, if anything is underweight (6' 3" maybe 180 pounds back than, is leaner now) and eats his vegies, keeps fried foods to a miniumum and all those other nasties they talk about... He had to take the medicine to get his under control, if I remember correctly it was a fast fix once he started up..

One of these days, soon, I will have to start eating better and take those drugs too. Probably if I would start eating better and getting more exercise it would be less of a problem. n the future... LAst time I got mine tested mine was on the low side... Took it as a kid once for some reason or another and they said it was off teh charts... but back than I was probab a BCS 1 and now I am more like a 6.

I don't believe they know enough about Cholestrol even yet, to prescribe
drugs to treat it. (If there are heart problems in your family, disregard what I am about to say.)

Mr. FH ratio was supposedly terrible (ratio between good and bad)
soooo they told him what he was supposed to eat and not eat.
He never did anything they told him too, and every time he got
rechecked his colestrol ratio was better, until finally it was fine.
Ohhh, they told him how good he did, etc. etc. He never did anything
different. I can tell you story after story like this.

Like a friend whose cholestrol was through the roof. The dr put him
on a strict diet. When he got retested, the bad cholestrol was worse
while the good cholestrol wasn't as good as it was in the beginning.

I think it is a billion-dollar industry that the drs. don't have the
answers to even yet.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Doc prescribed Lovastatin for my high cholesterol.

Damn stuff is sure effective - 30 days and they can use me for a good example - dropped it about 60 points - and mine wsn't near as high as yours, Haymaker.

Believe I'm on a generic version so it doesn't cost more than a few cents per day.

gotta be careful with those cholesterol drugs, haymaker!! They are mainly metabolized through the liver and can cause alot of damage if not monitored correctly!!! My good friend (who is also an incredibly knowledgable Physician assistant) eats oatmeal and drinks a large glass of grape juice (yes, the purple stuff) a day and SWEARS by it.....good testimony since high cholesterol runs in his family and he weighs over 250#!!! Do your research and watch for signs of liver damage!!!

My Hubby has been on Crestor for a couple of years now. It works well, but it's not cheap by any means.

I agree anyone on it needs to have their liver function checked on a regular basis. It's just a blood test, so no need to panic over that!

A neighbour of ours had the muscle pain reaction and had to quit the medicine, so he handles it with diet and regular exercise. It seems to work for him, but he does get his blood checked quite often to make sure he stays on top of it.

I read the paper they give me again it sez.........total kalestrol 286
good kalestrol 50
bad kalestrol 202.

Your total cholesterol level should be less than 200. Good cholesterol (yours is 50) level will increase with more exercise. Bad cholesterol of 202: try to eat less cheese, red meats, read the labels on the foods you eat. Increase vegetables and activity.
Some of the drugs used to control cholesterol levels can affect your liver functions so your doctor will have to do a blood test every 6 weeks or so. Also if you have muscle pain or weakness, call your doctor.
This is a link to the American Heart Organization. It gives you a lot of information. J

Studies have shown diet only contributes to 25% of a persons cholesterol problem. 75% is controled by liver function/genetics.

Things that are hard on the liver are illness (hepatitus), toxins (pollution and too much alcohol), and cholesterol drugs.

People that cut out meats and dairy from their diets don't show marked improvement in cholesterol because they usually eat more sugars to compensate for the lost taste of fat.

A better route is to improve liver function by taking things like milk thistle, exercising, and reducing toxins. Limit alcohol to 1 glass of red wine, proven to help fight cholesterol.

Changing a person's lifelong habits is easier said than done. Studies prove diets that feel restrictive will not be adhered to, resulting in no benefit to the patient.

Taking natural foods like meat and cheese from a rancher is like polishing a pine box in front of a retirement home.

ALL very valid points, Kato!! Unless you have insurance that will COVER these meds, they can really take their toll on your pocket book!! My ex husband had a small stroke when he was only 27 years old due to familial hypercholesterolemia (aka......high cholesterol that runs in the family)....his FASTING cholesterol was 429!!!! This is a man who eats healthy, works out and is in "good shape", yet due to genetics he was very high risk!! However, the meds they wanted to put him on were so very expensive that he found himself with the choice that so many others have....."Do I buy my meds or do I feed my family???"....... :???:
