Is this a Texas thing??

Question for "ya'll"......

Down here I've noticed on more than one occassion at more than one place that people would put water in bags (like baggies) and hang them around. I noticed these and thought to myself...oh Lord, this northern boy is gonna have to ask. Well I did and they told me that it was some old wise tail that the water in baggies would keep flies away!!! I sorta threw the BS flag, and left it at that....but there weren't any flies around really.....coincidence prolly!??! I'd never heard of that till I was around a few Texans?

Rather than it "prolly" being an "old wise tail", my guess is that it is "probably" an "old wives' tale". :? :)

Wife read in the paper about a restaurant in Arizona doing that - had little baggies of water hanging around the outside patio and swore it kept the flies at bay. They were supposed to be afraid of the water or something. When we got moved to Texas, she decided it must work with Texas flies also, so had me fill baggies and hang them around the patio. I guess Texas flies are smarter than Arizona flies because they didn't even slow down. I finally snuck in fly strips and had them hanging as well. After about two weeks she decided that the water bags scared the flies into the fly strips so now I have both hanging on the patio.

Good joke Faster Horses.

When I was a wee slip of a lad, I remember Mom putting jars of water out around our garden to keep the rabbits out. I know that for some reason that would work.

Another thing that always worked well on the rabbits was a .22 rifle by the back porch.... For some reason that worked also.

Your kidding!? You mean I didn't need to buy all thta rabbit fencing?
But then water's another mosquito breeding site so that's out and
I'd probably shoot down all my zinnias with the .22. There's a good cartoon in that somewhere.

I've seen it...been to a couple bbq's where they had baggies with water hangin around the patio....I guess it worked cuz I didnt notice any flys..but it just looked tacky....kinda the same affect as milk jugs full of water linin your front yard to keep stray dogs away.....(real tacky)...
but I spose if the flys got bad enuff I might give it a try....the baggy thang that is....NOT the milk jug thang.

our corrals are just a hop-skip and jump from the house and the flies get pretty thick around here.....and if there is one thing i HATE is the dreaded fly-tape hanging from every ceiling in the house!!  !!! so, i guess we will give the baggies of water a try and see......stay tuned for updates!!
I'll bet if you hang a fly-tape on every bag of water - the flys will get hung up on the fly tape trying to get a drink of water - or they will die of thirst trying to drink through a plastic bag - or you can swat the juice out of them with a fly swatter, break the water bag and drown the flys! :???:

'course, for those of you who are old enough to remember - you could just call "Quick, Henry, the Flit!"
