WASHINGTON, September 3, 2014 — The Obama Administration's bizarre and ill-conceived foreign policy, covert CIA activities in Libya, Egypt and Syria, and the spillover into Iraq raise grave questions about administration goals. The all-but-certain collapse of Afghanistan and the atrocities we are seeing in Iraq and in Syria are not a product of miscalculations.

The miscalculation interpretation of our disastrous policies might be plausible if the circumstances that put American weapons in the hands of the Islamic State to wage genocidal campaigns in Syria and Iraq were one-off accidents by the Bush and Obama Administrations. Instead, there is a clearly identifiable pattern that argues against incompetence and in favor of something between gross negligence and wanton, treasonous misconduct.

The evidence argues for the latter: The last two administrations are complicit in war crimes.

Adding to the existing trail leading back to Obama, Bush, and Bill Clinton are more reports uncovered from the data released in the Wiki Leaks document dumps, and also in mainstream media reports.

As recently as April 19, the Wall Street Journal filed a report disclosing from inside Pentagon sources that:

[T]he U.S. and Saudi Arabia have supplied Syrian rebel groups with a small number of advanced American antitank missiles for the first time in a pilot program that could lead to larger flows of sophisticated weaponry. The White House would neither confirm nor deny it had provided the TOW armor-piercing antitank systems, the first significant supply of sophisticated U.S. weapons systems to rebels. But U.S. officials did say they are working to bolster the rebels' ability to fight the regime.

When the White House "neither confirms nor denies", that is usually a confirmation. The "Syrian rebel groups" in the report, are in fact, elements that were claimed by the Pentagon, John McCain, Hillary Clinton and others, to be "moderate" and "secular" elements of the Syrian opposition, but that were reasonably suspected even then to be al Qaeda. They have since been folded into the Islamic State.

The Saudis are well informed by the Obama administration as to the specifics on the arms transfers, while at the same time the American people are largely in the dark regarding the U.S. firepower being turned over to what they were warned at the time by credible counter terrorism experts, were Islamist militants.

The Wall Street Journal, citing Obama administration officials, noted in December of last year that, Washington's objective in arming and training rebels "wasn't so much to help [them] win as to assuage allies who thought the U.S. wasn't engaged."

That's precisely the sort of confused, unfocused and grossly negligent handling of foreign policy and military assistance that needlessly enlarge and prolong conflicts, metastasize threats, and expose innocents to genocide and war crimes.

Making matters worse was Secretary of State John Kerry's fabricated assessment last September:

The opposition has increasingly become more defined by its moderation, more defined by the breadth of its membership and more defined by its adherence to … [the] democratic process and to an all-inclusive, minority-protecting constitution which will be broad-based and secular with respect to the future of Syria.

If anyone knew, Kerry had reason to know what we all know now: This was a complete misrepresentation of the truth. Reuters interviewed an unnamed spokesperson from an alleged moderate element of the Syrian opposition forces, the Islam Brigade, who said:

The front is divided between the radical groups who follow ISIL and the others who are Islamist but accept minorities and want to follow a more moderate Islamist interpretation for the country. This does not change that.

The "this" he was referring to was a near complete rejection to re-organize rebel fighters under so called secular leadership. What is a "more moderate Islamist interpretation"? Merely forced conversions and the imposition of Sharia and not wholesale slaughter, pillage and rape?

If Obama, Clinton, McCain, General Petraeus or Leon Panetta were ever taken in by the fiction they were spouting, certainly matters were beyond misinterpretation by September 2013; in consequence, Obama audaciously requested from Congress an additional $500 million in aid to rebels in June, 2014.

By that time anyone paying attention knew that "secular" elements in the armed Syrian opposition were as real and as potent as Sleeping Beauty. We stress "armed", because there are peaceful, non-confrontational opposition groups advocating for the end of sectarian violence within Syria and a government that safeguards human rights for all religious and ethnic communities.
