A bipartisan group of Senators is concerned about USDA's proposed rule allowing the import of live Canadian cattle born after March 1st of 1999. The four Senators from cattle producing states made their concerns known in a letter to U.S. Ag Secretary Mike Johanns.
The letter says increasing U.S. imports of Canadian cattle and beef will impact the economic well-being of U.S. cattlemen. It also says the expanded rule might disrupt efforts to further open U.S. export markets overseas. The Senators are also concerned that expanding Canadian cattle imports increases the possibility that a future case of BSE in a Canadian animal would be found in the U.S.
South Dakota Republican John Thune, North Dakota Democrat Byron Dorgan, Wyoming Republican Mike Enzi and New Mexico Democrat Jeff Bingaman signed the letter.
