I see the shovel was put to use for awhile so I'm guessing you did not take much time to reflect on life's little ups and downs while you were waiting to be rescued?
Good thing you have cell service, it is a long way to walk from South Dakota to Nebraska.

We have some little walkie talkies. If you walkie to the right spot you can talkie to the other partner. :D

I could have done quite a bit of digging using the same calories that it took to climb a hill where there was cell service. The snow was melting and it was slick. It would have taken a lot of digging to have gotten unstuck. My objective was to lead the 39 young cows to the pasture where they will spend the rest of the winter. I planned to give them one last bale of hay and a little cake as a reward for following the pickup, and then shut my eyes to them from here on out. They came up open last fall, so bulls were with them from November 1st until January 1st. During the breeding season and while the weather was so cold I fed them quite well. Now they get leftover summer grass, soapweeds, salt, mineral, and a choice of water or snow for liquid refreshment. They did get the hay and cake, so they were happy for today.

Geez Soap  That looks like the only snow drift in the country. :D

Yeah, I know. I'm not very proud. For one thing, if I had just used a horse I'd have gotten home much quicker. The breeze was quite brisk early on, so laziness and wimpiness overcame my cowboy scruples. But I really did want to feed the cows one last time.

I could probably get a Caterpillar stuck. :)

sure wish we had some of that bare ground. we got in the low 40's today. i wish we could have a week in the 50's and really put a hurtin' on some of this snow.
you are lucky to have cell service there on the ranch. we have business radios in all our outfits. cell service here is hit and miss at best. and when a person gets in a bind, it is always a miss

Almost looks like you backed into that spot just to see if it was deep? No worries, I would have panicked at that point and burned up the transmission before I recalled that I was packing a cell phone.

Gee Soapweed, where's all your snow? Next time you get up on a hill look my way, there's 6 to 8 foot snowdrifts on Hiway 18. You never seem to get as much snow as we do. Must be an elevation thing. I moved some cows to a new corn field today but it will be Spring before all that snow is melted. OK, I'm done whining for today.

That stockpiled water will look good going into the ground next spring when you need it Big Swede. Soap needs that bare ground for his "early summer" calving date.

I'm not a big fan of wintertime snow. We always get a Jan or Feb thaw and it all runs down hill and out of the country. The only snow that does us much good is during Mar and Apr when the ground has thawed out. If you ask Soapweed I'll bet he's not a big fan of Mar and Apr snow either.
