Japan BSE herd mates test negative
Monday, February 13, 2006, 10:05 AM

by Tom Steever

The herd mates of Japan's 22nd bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) case have tested negative for the disease, according to wire reports out of Japan. Japanese authorities say that the 45 cattle were thought to be infected with BSE, but all tested negative.

Japanese guidelines dictate that cattle given the same feed and raised in the same pen of any BSE positive case are considered suspected BSE carriers.

Japanese officials say the animal that died in January and was found to have BSE had been fed meat and bone meal, which has been banned in Japan since 2001.
