Japan opposes OIE's proposal to relax its beef trading rules over BSE.

The Japanese Agriculture Ministry has criticized proposals from the World Animal Health Organisation to ease restrictions on trade in boneless beef. The OIE has proposed to member countries that boneless beef should be placed on the "tradable" list. However, the Japanese Agriculture Ministry said that even if bones are removed meat from cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy could still be processed and the infectivity remained.
The ministry warned that any relaxation of the rules should be considered carefully in case meat from parts of the animal with high potential infectivity enter the food chain.
Japan is expected to ask the OIE to modify its proposals at a meeting this week. The Japanese are concerned that the United States could use any relaxation in the BSE control measures as a means of speedily ending the Japanese import ban on U.S. beef.
