"New" tractor I bought yesterday to pull a nine-foot mower. The 2010 John Deere diesel has a certain amount of sentimental value,
as this young man and his sister both learned to drive when using it to help their grandfather put up hay. He bought it new in about 1965.
The young lady lives in western Wyoming and is in the Sandhills with her kids visiting family.

Pretty nice young bay horse that I bought last winter. Right after I brought him home, he got the strangles and lost a lot of weight.
Now that he has recovered I think he will turn into a good using horse.

My little buddy brought up some vaccine and helped me doctor a calf.

Since I hadn't named this horse yet, I asked my kids for some suggestions. Kosmo kontributed "Moonlight," as in "Moonlight Bay."
Sounds good to me, and Moonlight it shall be.

Good pictures as usual. :D

That 2010 will come in handy. You still use a single 9 ?
I thought you pulled all doubles.

The bay looks good, I have some colts that need riding but it gets hard at haying time. :?

There are times when it would just be handy to have another single bar mower. A couple days ago I heard about a good Kosch mower for sale. Thought this little JD 2010 would be just right to pull it.

Moonlight is a pretty good lookin' horse. As much as you use them, he'll make a good one. I liked him in the first pic I saw--just the ears. Good width between the ears, & thats where he keeps his brains! The ears was payin' attention to the bovine.

Thanks for the picts! You have a nice string of ponies. Be glad ya don't reside out here cause the bill for shoer would cause ya pain! Do ya shoe your horses in that sandy country?

Shoeing horses where we live is unnecessary because there aren't any rocks. Some people sharp shoe in the winter time to keep their horses from slipping on ice, but we don't.

At $55 a head i quit calling the shoer and started nailing them on myself three years ago. Now it's around 80 to come out here and shoe. Pretty cattle, lots of grass, abundant water, beautiful family and horse-shoe-free-horses? My picture of perfection :D

Strangles = distemper. Nasty highly contagious disease that generally causes a swelling in the throat of horses. It can get bad enough to choke them off pretty good. When the swelling breaks, if it breaks outside it's a good thing, if it breaks inside it can be bad. Sometimes it manifest in the horses legs, I think that's called bastard strangles. It can cause the skin to slough off the legs and can make a real mess.

It is not a good deal. This horse I bought brought it in, and my Smokey horse and Kosmo's roan both got it. Everything came out of it okay, but they sure lost a lot of condition; throwing feed at them didn't seem to help.

It's pretty scary, and sad to see. When it came through here last we happened to be in the middle of record cold snap. Of course, the only horse not to make it was the kids pony :?

Thanks for the info. That sounds like a bad deal and could be pretty devastating. Glad to hear your "ranch machinery" is over the hump and back on track.

Hey Soapweed,

Excellent horse! I am a little partial to bays......I've owned two.

Someone has probably asked you this before, but do you get crazy wind and tornados?

Looks like a place I'd like to live. It's beautiful and your cattle are thriving!

I was just thinking of that (strangles) today since today was the Brockway Mt. rodeo....About 12 years ago I hauled all the kids and horses to that rodeo- and all the horses we took there- plus most the broncs- and everybody elses horses got it....And the horses we had there gave it to about 1/2 the horses at home- and we were really horse poor for the summer...Sad thing was it hit all the kids 4-H horses- so they couldn't show their horses that year... :(
