With my shift work/12 hour schedule on my day job, I end up with lots of days off. (One of the good things about shift work) So I got the opportunity to spend two days in the high country as a scout leader. On the trip up, I spotted a moose! Quite the sight for a desert dweller! Glad I didnt have a horse with me as I might'a tryed dabbing on a loop and hauling her home. I managed to sneek up on her thanks to a finger of trees and snap her picture. The wind was pretty swirly though and she didnt stick around to sign autographs!
The Uinta Mountains are sure pretty. This shot was while traveling so sorry for the bug guts on the window!
Each day, we'd have breakfast and the flag raisin' and stuff and then send the boys off to merit badge classes til lunch. The dedicated leaders would attend scoutmaster training classes while dressed in adult scout uniforms. The "leaders" wearing boots and wranglers would slip off toward the east fork of the Bear River with fishing pole in hand to catch cut-throat trout!
I had a little parachute adams fly on 4 feet of leader and a bobber. (That constitutes a fly rig in my country) While the fish werent big, they were a ball to catch and throw back! If I had this much water out where I live, I could sure grow a lot more cactus and rattle snakes!
The Rocky Mountains are the marrow of the world!
While water and moose are nice, i was happy to get back out on the desert. We have a little bunch of little bucks that come through our place after spending the night eating hay over in town. Nothing huge but still fun to see out your back porch.
As we came home one evening they were just across the fence. They are pretty mellow and stood around awhile while I snapped away.
Just little guys.
The best buck is 22-23 inches and a 5 by 5. One two point has a little drop tine started.
I love mule deer!
The feed has started to turn thanks to the hot temps and little moisture but the cows are doing well. The old red sister has bad manners though!
Our bull in a funky pose. He is pretty mellow like the rest of our little bunch. It'll be fun to see his calves next year!
This years calves are sure blooming. This is a bull calf we kept to sell.
Steer calf out of a 1st calf heifer.
A heifer calf enjoying the bumper crop of flys. That's why they have tails!
A replacement heifer and a favorite of mine.
Just a pair. Bet ya a nickle that steer calf will top 650 by October 10th.
An AI calf that started out pretty strong but has since become kinda average. He's a bull too but may get his mind changed this fall.
Another pair.
And another. This little framed cow was a bit thin this spring when we turned them out, but has fleshed up as good as she ever does.
Scattered out in the morning sun.
My other little bunch riding on our new flat bed. It's only new to us though. I bought it a couple years ago. I am not anywhere near "Sparky's" league when it comes to mechanicin'/weldin' but i got her put together. Amazing what a paint job does too!
As we headed back to the highway to head down the valley for home, we HAD to stick some toes in the creek. I can't believe July is behind us already! Hope ya'll have a fine August!
