Moseying around trying to sneak a loop on other sick calves. The vet arrived.
We had doctored four calves, and there looked to be several more about ready to become sick.
The vet suggested that we might want to treat the whole herd in this pasture as prevention.

We went home, had dinner, and came back with portable corrals to gather the bunch of one hundred head. This was part of the entourage.

Sunflower went to the big town to get medicine. Then she made herself useful by encouraging the calves to go up the alley. I mainly just took pictures. :)

Hope they quit having runny noses soon. What did ya vaccinate them with? I like your trailer for packin' panels. Bet your son built it!

We gave each calf 15 cc's of Oxymycin 200 for treatment and 1 cc of Pulmoguard (Pasteurella) for future prevention.

Actually the trailer came with the panels. They are made by Scott Manufacturing of Clinton, Nebraska. They are nice panels to work with, and have well-made interlocking latches that don't come apart unless you want them to.

Are the posts temporary on the chute, or do you hafta dig holes each time you set the panels up in a different pasture. Or do you leave the posts there to be used each time?

We hardly ever set the panels up in the same place twice. The posts were put in today to form a narrow alleyway to work the calves in, and the posts were pulled out when the corrals were taken down this evening. Fortunately the digging was damp and easy. :) Normally we don't set posts and just let the zigs and zags of the portable panels support the corral.

We and a couple of our neighbors are having the same trouble with summer pneumonia here also. In the bush, summer found and treated and summer dead. :(

I'm curious what would cause this type of summer pneumonia - what vaccinations do you give earlier Soapweed - say at branding time?

I have treated a few for it the last week or so. I think what gets us is the irrigation water making it cool down at night then hot days. We seem to get a few each year even with the vaccinations we give in the spring.

At branding time the calves were given Bovashield Gold 5 and Ultra-Choice 7 (Blackleg). Usually this is enough. The vet says that many ranchers are also giving a half dose (one cc) of Pasteurella vaccine. This is what we gave yesterday, and in retrospect, I wish we had given it at branding time. I think just the stress of all the high winds and spring storms during calving may have something to do with the calves getting sick now. So far, the sickness seems to be confined to just the one bunch. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Ty's got a buckskin that's a deadringer for that one of yours-well he will when he gets done paying BMR for him. He bought him to resell but I think he's going to be hanging around here for a long time-a real solid smart horse. Once my belly heals up I'm going to steal him from him.

Oh no, sorry to hear you're going through some sickness in your calves :? . I'm hauling to the forest to check our calves tomorrow... after reading your post, I'm going to take my medicine along just in case.

Hope they straighten out for you soon! :D
