The Texas Section Society for Range Management (TSSRM) had a great meeting in the humid (and I mean humid) far east Texas community of Beaumont!!! This was my farthest I've been east in Texas so it was a new experience. 90 degrees and 100% humidity!! Seen another new one for me....a road killed aligator!!! We toured some of the hurricane flooded coastal plains and had a successful meeting with nearly 200 in attendance, which was really good since a majority of the members drove at least 6 hours to get there! Beaumont is a LONG ways over there!! The Texas Section awarded some outstanding deserving individuals for jobs well done, and heard some motivating talks by leaders of range management throughout the state. We had people there from all corners of Texas and I believe the farthest individual was from North Dakota!!
I can not understand tho how there are over 23 million people in the state of Texas and yet only about 500 feel it important enough to be members of the SRM, when rangelands make up most of not only Texas, but the nation and world. SRM is about the only professional organization dedicated to the study, conservation and sustainable management of these rangelands for the society and future generations.
I challenge you to become a member and join the section in which you live (and others if you wish). I'm a member of the Texas and South Dakota Sections. I can not make the South Dakota meetings or tours always, but I support my home states efforts and causes concerning the SRM.
2010 National meeting is in Denver, Colorado on Feb. 7-11th.
2011 National meeting is in Billings, Montana on Feb. 5-11th
2010 Texas Section Annual Meeting is in Odessa, TX
2011 Texas Section Annual Meeting is in San Angelo, TX
