It was one of those nights. At 1:30 wife says "John I just saw a cow walk across the back yard". I don't know what caused them to break out.

She had just woke up kinda sudden like, prolly cuz she heard cattle bawling. Yup, the cows were mostly trailing down the road or splitting off into our calving pasture which is quite well fenced except for around the new barn and has a good regrowth.

The bunch that went down the road headed into the neighbour's hay field and headed back home when I gave a few yips at them. They know they belong at home.

So, we got them back into the calving pasture and I had to re-run a couple hundred feet of electric wire that had been taken down to build the barn.

Fortunately, we had pounded the posts in earlier this week and all I had to do was run the wire and clip it into the insulators which my son had stapled on right after we put the posts in.

It was a beautiful night to be outside - fairly bright moon and very still. No frost. No traffic, so thank goodness, no accidents.

So at three in the morning I headed back into the house, cattle back in, fencing done!

Coulda been a whole lot worse so life is good.

we had kinda the same late night some time back, my father in law call about 1 in the morning , all in a panic ,tolled me to grab a gun and get dressed , maybe not in that order and to meet him outside ,
we had the cows about 2 miles from home ,when I got my thoughts together and made it outside it sounded like the cows were only a 1/4 mile from home . I jump in the jimmy and away we went . when we got to the gate there was cows every where , something sure got them worked up , we head across the pasture dodging cows and holes looking for what ever there was , well what ever it was , then he spotted it , a poor coyote , his foot hit the pedal and away we went again , me trying to get a gun loaded and getting it stuck out window with out blowing a hole in grama's jimmy and he's yelling shoot it shoot it , I was trying but I was never very good at hanging a gun out the window at a high rate of speed going 40 mph across the pasture . I never did get a shot off and I 'm kinda glad that coyote got away cause I think he was just as scared as I was . I learned a few things that night , why grandmothers don't like when there husbands drive there truck's late at night and there should be speed limits posted in pastures , slow at all times :D
