Just in from Iraq

I was just reading the Billings Gazette. There was an anti war protest held on the steps of the Capital yesterday in Helena. After the article in Gazette telling of state legislators who took part in the protest was this response. It is way to good to not share.

"I'm Tired" Two weeks ago, as I was starting my sixth month of duty in Iraq, I was forced to return to the USA for surgery for an injury I sustained prior to my deployment. With luck, I'll return to Iraq to finish my tour. I left Baghdad and a war that has every indication that we are winning, to return to a demoralized country much like the one I returned to in 1971 after my tour in Vietnam. Maybe it's because I'll turn 60 years old in just four months, but I'm tired: I'm tired of spineless politicians, both Democrat and Republican who lack the cour age, fortitude, and character to see these difficult tasks through. I'm tired of the hypocrisy of politicians who want to rewrite history when the going gets tough. I'm tired of the disingenuous clamor from those that claim they 'Support the Troops' by wanting them to 'Cut and Run' before! victory is achieved. I'm tired of a mainstream media that can only focus on car bombs and casualty reports because they are too afraid to leave the safety of their hotels to report on the courage and success our brave men and women are having on the battlefield. I'm tired that so many Americans think you can rebuild a dictatorship into a democracy over night. I'm tired that so many ignore the bravery of the Iraqi people to go to the voting booth and freely elect a Constitution and soon a permanent Parliament. I'm tired of the so called 'Elite Left' that prolongs this war by giving aid and comfort to our enemy, just as they did during theVietnam War. I'm tired of antiwar protesters showing up at the funerals of our fallen soldiers. A family who's loved ones gave their life in a just and noble cause, only to be cruelly tormented on the funeral day by cowardly protesters is beyond shameful. I'm tired that my generation, the Baby Boom -- Vietnam generation, who have such a weak backbone that they can't stomach seeing the difficult tasks through to victory. I'm tired that some are more concerned about the treatment of captives than they are the slaughter and beheading of our citizens and allies. I'm tired that when we find mass graves it is seldom reported by the press, but mistreat a prisoner and it is front page news. Mostly, I'm tired that the people of this great nation didn't learn from history that there is no substitute for Victory. Sincerely, Joe Repya, Lieutenant Colonel, U. S. Army 101st Air borne

I have to wonder if the Pentagon would allow an active duty soldier to speak negatively like this AGAINST the war. Military rules:

E3.3.6. Allow or cause to be published partisan political articles signed or written by the member that solicits votes for or against a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.

E3.3.8. Speak before a partisan political gathering, including any gathering that promotes a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.

E3.3.9. Participate in any radio, television, or other program or group discussion as an advocate for or against of a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.

The military channel has lots of home videos taken by the troops and documentaries by implanted and military journalists....Very good shows and definitely not tilted toward the bleeding hearts...

I watched one the other day that followed a Marine unit thru its tour of duty...A lot of disenchanted marines-- saying that they were having to do what they weren't trained for- instead of fighting a war and kicking butt they were nothing more than policemen- that were policing with their hands tied behind their backs... They commented how you could trust noone- but that their were plenty of snitches- usually because of an old feud or tribal disagreement- but that you never knew if it was reliable....
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend"--today anyway, but tomorrow he might be sniping at them...

And it looked like they not only had to put up with a lot of US restrictions on what they could and could not do- including rules of engagement-- but they were also having to put up with a lot of corrupt Iraqui government...They talked of how hard they worked to catch believed terrorists to just have the Iraqui courts set them free the next day to do it all over again  And then their were certain Shia clerics in each town that actually had ID cards identifying them as such- and no matter what they were doing they couldn't arrest or detain them....The marines called it a "Get out of Jail Free Card"...

I really felt sorry for them because it looked like they were in a no win situation- because there was no real way to win with the cards they were being dealt.... :(

Actually I think the military channel is pretty good about showing both the successful actions and ventures they have and some of the more disapointing and depressing sides of the job....Shows the horrors of war and the high moments....Some of the good things the troops have been able to accomplish- along with the negatives and difficulties they face.....

They don't paint it with a leaning toward either side...

They have a daily 1/2 hour news put on by the military with military news reporters every day at 2PM MST- that I try to catch if I can...Called Around the Servives--Shows which units returning and which deploying....New technology being deployed....New command changes...

As a history buff and especially a WWII history buff I started watching because of that- but have gotten interested in the Iraq war too....

Shnurrbart, READ WHAT IT SAYS. He is tired of you libs trashing everything that our President says, tries to do, everything that our troops say and try to do. I cannot believe that you think his post is anti war. What are you thinking?
OT, I watch the Military channel sometimes too, more people should as it does cover all of the perspectives, not just the left wing ones. The Gazette in it's true liberal slant also said that the huge crowd on the Capital steps (was really only 3 dozen) was subject to a counter protest of 40 people across the street. Only they did not have time to go across the street to interview the people with a differing view of the war and the problems this nation is facing.

Where did I say his post was anti-war? I'll type slower. I said I wondered if the pentagon would allow an active duty soldier to talk in this manner against the war. Obviously, this guy is very pro war and pro bush. He ran the bush re-election team in MN or something to that effect. However, military rules state that active duty personnel are not allowed to engage in partisan politics. Those are the rules I posted. Do you get it now?

Good Post, I'm tired as well.
I'm tired too. It gets old to hear the standard grind here against our troops and their war effort. It gets old.

Just one time, I wish you guys would get it straight. You always say that the libs are grinding against the troops, are against the troops, don't support the troops, ad nauseum. Please point out one single instance where someone actually said that they were against the troops or even said anything derogatory about the American soldier. Please! I would really like to see it.

However, if you are going to bring up that tired BS about disagreeing with bush is being against the troops, just keep it to yourself because I am tired of seeing that!!

Your cousin Work/Study make a very derogatory comment to a veteran once. Thankfully though, it got deleted by the moderator so I won't be able to take you by the hand and guide you to it......sorry.

I know, I know, he's not your cousin.

You just cast the soldier in sw's post in a negative light on this thread. You suggested he broke military rules, not something most lt. colonels would want said about them.

It is difficult to believe that any active duty person could write such an article without consequences...Remember the Chaplain that prayed in the name of Jesus, in a public prayer and was court martialed for it.....

The Pentagon sure reacted negatively to the sweet young AF Drill Sgt that posed in Playboy this month...Probably the fact she's partially in uniform in a couple of the pictures....

If the Air Force only realized what a recruiting tool she could be-- she could even make old fogies think about signing up... I definitely never saw any like her on any of the AF bases I was on....

Thanks for posting that sw. I think that someone giving you a little grief maybe just looked in the mirror and felt a bit ashamed.

What I posted was no more derogatory than what right wing wackos on here post to the "lefties". This site is biased as hell and some don't get the same set of rules as the others. Furthermore the post had nothing to do with troops and everything to do with memanpa's ignorance. I swear you neocons on here are the most sensitive, snivelling, pukes. It must get exhausting waking up everyday searching the internet and listening to hour after hour of limbaugh, hannity, and o'reilly just to find little snippets of half-truths so that you can justify your war to the other 70% of the country who think what you and your president thinks is wrong.

I haven't heard a second of Rush in 5 or 6 years. I have no idea who Hannity is and have never heard Bill O'Reilly although I have heard of him. I love screwing with you and Schnurrbart because you two are so bitter and offer such scathing remarks that it just amuses me to no end. I light up when I check in here and see that you guys have been at it again! Such bitterness evokes feelings of pity while making me chuckle at the same time. I feel bad that you guys can't pull yourselves away from here even though no one agrees with anything you say. I am not part of anybody's pack so don't start that nonsense either. I totally disagree with people who say "let's just go wipe those towelheads off the face of the earth". I do not, however, have all the facts with most of what goes on in Washington and around the world and neither does anyone else. Quite honestly, without you two sourpusses and a couple of other people with their lower lip dragging the ground, Political Bull would be one place I would never stop. By the way......he's YOUR president too!!

Gee whiz, at one time I also said Lt Calley was a murdering sob too but that in no way reflects poorly upon the American soldier. I will also tell you that I caught one of my corporals smoking pot in Germany one time. I escorted him to the company commander for discipline. That also did not reflect poorly upon the American soldier. Is it possible for you to understand that? Don't try to play word games with me.

Ranchers seems to be the only place that you and the people who agree with you can escape reality. O yeah Fox Noise Channel is another safe haven. And you are right, he is my president unfortunately, I can't believe I voted for the dumba$$ in 2000. I guess that makes me a flip flopper.

I'm not bitter. My remarks are not more scathing that the remarks mine are in response to. Do you not read the remarks of the conservative members of this forum? Do you honestly think that you would not respond with your opinion if someone continually called you a traitor and unAmerican because you feel that a war is unjust when the real perps of a horrendous attack on this country is still loose? I don't deserve nor need your pity so don't waste it on me. And another item. When a clearly environmentally unconscious president signs a statement giving himself more power to control the agencies assigned the job of protecting our environment by the use of political appointees instead of scientists, it scares the crap out of me. So, no, I am not bitter. Just very concerned. Something you should know and understand. The Bible clearly states that man is to be the steward of the earth and all living things on it. Bush claims to be a very religious man but his actions seem to direct him toward the corp level.
