FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

VICTORY FOR AMERICA'S HORSES
House of Representatives Passes Bill to End Horse Slaughter
Over Ag Industry Opposition

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 7, 2006): With overwhelming support, the House
of Representatives voted 263 to 146 in favor of H.R. 503, the American
Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to ban the slaughter of horses for human
consumption and the domestic and international transport of live horses
or horseflesh for the same purpose.

The measure was adopted despite strident last-minute efforts by the
agriculture industry to kill the bill-including "poison pill" amendments
and intense lobbying from the agriculture industry, led by former
Representative Charles Stenholm (D-TX).

In the debate leading up to the vote, bill sponsors Representative John
Sweeney (R-NY), Representative John Spratt (D-SC), Representative Ed
Whitfield (R-KY) and Representative Nick Rahall (D-WV) effectively
argued the legislation's necessity. Showing graphic images of the
horrific cruelty endured by horses being transported to slaughterhouses,
the legislators exposed the inhumane conditions inflicted on more than
92,000 of America's horses last year alone.

"What we are exposing today is a brutal, shadowy, and shameful
practice," Sweeney stated.

There are three horse slaughter plants in the United States; one is in
Illinois and the other two are in Texas. All are foreign owned and the
profits and the meat go overseas. Horsemeat, considered a delicacy, is
consumed in France, Belgium and Japan.

"Today we saw the very best of Congress by their overwhelming passage of
the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act," noted Chris Heyde, deputy
legislative director for the Society for Animal Protective Legislation.
"Once again they listened to the facts and responsible organizations and
individuals dedicated to the welfare of horses in the country by
rejecting the false claims presented by the few who profit from the
suffering of America's horses."

Supporters of the measure include actress Bo Derek who returned to
Washington, DC to lend her support, equine experience and compassion to
the cause. Singer Willie Nelson, who's family came to Washington, DC on
his behalf, said "congratulations to all the horse lovers out there who
have worked so hard to pass this bill. The horses appreciate it. Our
next big step is the Senate. Contact your Senators!"

The legislation will now move on to the Senate.

How do you feel - Write Letters

Action Needed to Stop HSUS from Exploiting the U.S. Postal Service Below is a sample letter to send your representative to prevent the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to place its anti-animal use rhetoric on postage stamps, and use money gained from the sale of the stamps to further its anti-hunting, anti-animal use mission.

Dear Congressman/Senator _______:

I ask that you contact the U.S. Postal Service and demand that it immediately stop promotion of the Humane Society of the United States through the mail via customized postage stamps. Furthermore, I ask that you demand an amendment to the USPS program, which allows this, so that it does not in the future provide such opportunities for political exploitation.

Earlier this year, Congress amended an 1872 law that forbade advertisements on U.S. currency, including postage stamps. This amendment paved the way for an experimental one-year trial period allowing companies such as Zazzle.com to offer customizable postage stamps via the Internet.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the largest and most vociferous animal rights organization in the country. Stamps featuring its politically biased, anti-animal use slogans are available through the website www.zazzle.com. Twenty percent of the profits from the sale of the stamps are given directly back to the Humane Society of the United States.

The part of Zazzle’s site that promotes HSUS stamps includes defamatory statements indicating that America’s farm animals are raised in “terrible” conditions. This section of the site also includes accusatory statements that America’s farm animals are “routinely-abused.” Nothing could be further from the truth. America’s farmers and ranchers have demonstrated lifelong commitment to their animals’ well being. Worse, yet HSUS does not operate a shelter for any sort of animal, even dogs and cats. Nor does it spend any of its estimated $100 million per year budget on farm animal welfare research.

I am proud to help America feed the world and am outraged that the USPS would allow inflammatory content on its postage stamps and on the site selling them. It is unconscionable that the Humane Society of the United States be allowed to profit from the sale of these stamps. I look forward to your response detailing your decision on this matter.

Sincerely,
(Voter Your name)_____________

Old dog I understand your passion about this issue and I agree. You cant make anyone do anything even if it is a worthy cause and only takes less than a min.
So you know I sent NC senators emails from me~Gordon~Larry & Carolyn~Sid & Helen~Don & Jeanie ~Tracy. I know they agree with our stand and they are not active in politics. I had all of thier permission to send on thier behalf. I have sent emails to some who I now are active and explained what is wrong with that bill.
Keep up the good work and DONT lose heart :D
