Justice Clarence Thomas = "Uncle Thomas"

A Democratic lawmaker from Minnesota criticized Tuesday’s Supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act by calling Justice Clarence Thomas “Uncle Thomas,” then saying he didn’t know “Uncle Tom” was a racist epithet.
On his Twitter account Tuesday, state Rep. Ryan Winkler called the justices’ 5-4 ruling striking down a part of the law racist, and the work of “four accomplices to race discrimination and one Uncle Thomas.” Justice Thomas, who is black, was one of the five justices in the majority.

That tweet was quickly deleted, and Mr. Winkler, who is white and represents some upper middle class suburbs west-southwest of Minneapolis, offered a conditional-tense quasi-apology in subsequent tweets.
He said he “didn’t think it was offensive to suggest that Justice Thomas should be even more concerned about racial discrimination than colleagues. But if such a suggestion is offensive, I apologize.”
However Mr. Winkler, whose website says he has an undergraduate history degree from Harvard and a law degree from the University of Minnesota, seemed to dig the hole deeper in a subsequent tweet, in which he said the racism of the term “Uncle Tom” was disputed and unknown to him.

“I did not understand ‘Uncle Tom’ as a racist term, and there seems to be some debate about it. I do apologize for it, however,” he said.
Later still, as backlash against his comments spread through political blogs and social network sites, Mr. Winkler issued a statement through the state House apologizing for his usage, though he neither specified the word nor mentioned Justice Thomas.
“In expressing that disappointment [with Tuesday’s Supreme Court decision] on Twitter, I hastily used a loaded term that is offensive to many. My words were inappropriate and I apologize,” he said. “I regret that my comments have distracted from the serious dialogue we must have going forward to ensure racial discrimination has no place in our election system.”

Of course he knew what he was saying. The context is wrong, but that's to be expected from the left, pandering to morons.

Paula Dean admitted she used the N word years ago and she lost her TV show this week as "the public has no time for racists", so it will be very interesting to see if this race bating DEMOCRAT lawman will be held to the same PUBLIC STANDARDS as Paula was. I'm betting not. :x

If She is a racist it would seem as if those liberal racists just voted for Obama to cover up their guilt...

Paula Deen, fired for past beliefs, voted for Obama

Television chef Paula Deen, who lost her gig Friday with the Food Network after admitting and apologizing for having used racial epithets, including the “N-word,” is a supporter of President Barack Obama and campaigned on his behalf in 2008.

The Southern-bred television personality also invited Michelle Obama onto one of her television programs and praised the first lady’s healthy eating agenda.

The Food Network star campaigned for Obama back in 2008, and invited his wife Michelle to cook with her during an episode of Paula's Party. Later, she said she "just loved" being around the First Lady, and praised her platform: encouraging kids and young adults to eat healthy and get plenty of exercise.

While no Paula Deen fan, it is shameful the way her comment of THIRTY YEARS AGO has been blown out of proportion.

One story this morning also said it was said while she was telling about being held at gunpoint during a bank robbery where she was a teller. The criminal: a black man. I believe anyone should be forgiven for calling him anything but a Christian under those circumstances!!!

And I have no respect for the business and media leaders who so quickly, almost gleefully, jumped onto the "trash Paula Deen while she's down" bandwagon.

I do agree with you on this one... I am not much of a fan of any celebrity..

but to take a thirty year old comment and destroy a person with it is wrong and vindictive...

the lawsuit she is fighting is a discrimination case.. against her brother and a manager.. in a restaurant the own..

Paula Deen Harassment Suit Could Get Dismissed By Judge

Earlier this month, Lisa Jackson, a former employee of Uncle Bubba's Oyster and Shrimp House, a restaurant owned by Paula Deen and her brother Bobby Hiers, sued her former employers for sexual harassment and racial discrimination. It wasn't absolutely inconceivable that Deen and Hiers might have done or said some of the things alleged in the suit. But the timing was suspect. It was hard to believe that the suit followed so hard upon Deen's diabetes scandal by chance. Some wondered whether Jackson could have been seizing on Deen's temporary weakness as an opportunity to shake her and her brother down for hush money.

The Augusta Chronicle reports that Deen's attorneys are saying that the suit was filed for "improper and unethical purposes." Specifically, they're arguing the suit was intended to blackmail Deen on the threat of defaming her business reputation. And what better time to do so than when her reputation is already in question?

Paula Deen's camp has responded to a lawsuit against her brother's Savannah restaurant, Uncle Bubba's Oyster House, that accused him of "sexual harassment and a persistent pattern of racial discrimination in the workplace."

Deen and her brothers' attorneys are claiming the only reason the lawsuit was brought up to begin with was "for the expressly stated purpose of irreparably damaging the name and brand" of Paula Deen's business enterprises.
