What I find odd is that I NEVER see a juvinile or nest ?????
I've got some pics. My wife and I found two young ones huddled up in an old house last year. There was a chunk of some kind of raw meat on the floor beside them. I suppose the mother brings them something to eat every once in a while.

They were ugly and sorta spooky looking. And made a loud hissing noise that would have been scary if my wife hadn't been there to protect me.

I'll try to get those pics into Photobucket and post them.

Man, they are uuuuuuuuuugly :!: Can imagine the hissing sound, do ya think they would come after you and bite your boots (just kidding about the comment you made about your wife).

Seriously, we have turkey vultures out here, they are ugly and EVIL.

At another ranch we were at many years ago, the ravens would try to peck the eyes out of baby calves. It was heartening/heart breaking to watch these first-calf heifers literally jump into the air to keep the golldarn things off their babies.

Cotton Pickin' scavengers anyway

I couldn't really tell for sure about the smell, nr. Something didn't smell very good, but I just assumed that it was the rotten meat.

Hanta Yo, my eared cows fight them pretty good, but the things do pretty good teamwork. Some try to distract the cow, while the others peck at the calf's eyes. I've lost several calves just from the cows tromping them.

Hanta.. You actually have trouble with Turkey Vultures or just don't like them because theyt are ugly? We have tons of them in this area and they don't do much at all except eat roadkill and hayfield kill. I have never seen them bother a cow or a calf.. They are generally here from about early to mid may until cometime in October and than they fly south.. Am told they never leave southern Illinois but they don't like the cold winters up here I guess.. I have seen as many as 20 lines up on along a fence in the late summer, generally above a spot that has gathered water. I am told they enst over in the pines that are near here

As far as them being stinky, never get that close but judging on what they eat, I would imagine they are stinky... Our winter scavenger around here are basiclally crows and Bald Eagles.. Don't have too many of those but if they find a good place for food (Say, a hot confinement operation that doesn't bury or haul away deads) they stick around..

We've NEVER had a problem with Turkey Buzzards.....ever....they do a good job keepin the road kill cleaned up.

But them Mexican Buzzards aint nothin but trouble....we've seen up to 40 in a bunch attacking baby calves and after so long them mama's just can't fight em off. They'll stick around messin with a cow n calf for hours on end. It's sad to see them peckin what's left of a baby calf they've killed and that mama cow still tryin to shew them away.....sometimes for 2 or 3 days she'll hang around and try to run em off.

Mrs. Greg, I felt really bad about them being cooped up in that man-made structure. It just didn't seem appropriate. So they were captured live and relocated to a more 'natural' location. If they made it through the first night, they learned a lot about predatory behavior.

I couldn't say for sure, they are there when there is a dead calf...along with coyotes, bald eagles, ravens. Especially when the calf was alive the day before...you just don't know. It seems turkey vultures go after the "big ones" so when we see one (or 5) we go see what they are eating....turkey vultures are very ugly. I didn't mean to rename Texan's baby birds he posted a pic of...turkey vultures are not the same

Sis-in-law must be one heck of a shot to shoot 16 magpies in one day.

I guess so,nephew got a deer, put the gut pile out by the house to draw the magpies to the pile, then she shot them all afternoon. Sis-in-law has always been a hunter. Magpies are about our worst nusance around here, its nothing to have 30 in our yard at one time. Those blasted magpie traps don't do any good at all.

We don't have as many as we used to. I think West Nile took some.
They are tricky to shoot. I think they can hear you thinking about getting the gun out .

We don't have many magpies anymore. I think Warbex eliminated most of them. I kind of enjoy seeing the little rascals. But of course, they aren't a problem here either.
