Three indicted on FEMA fraud charges
Three Montgomery women have been indicted on charges of fraudulently obtaining disaster aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Attorney Leura Canary announced Tuesday.
They were identified as Shulonda Johnson, 22; Shalanda Long, 32; and Grace Nichole Pettway, 31.The indictment alleges that all three defendants submitted applications for benefits to FEMA claiming that they had suffered damage to property they rented as their primary residence in Louisiana. In fact, the defendants lived in Montgomery, not Louisiana, and did not suffer the losses claimed.
Johnson and Pettway each received a benefit check for $2,000. Long received two checks, each for $2,000. Johnson and Pettway are each charged with one count of theft of government property. Long has been charged with two counts of theft of government property. Each count carries a statutory maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
All three have been released on bond.
